nDAC and Unity

Has anybody had a problem as the app (android) shows tracks as playing but the sync/hd lights on the dac have gone out and no music is playing, even thought he app says it is. I tried powering on/off and reset the unitycore but still no music. Can anybody help?

Thanks

If the app shows that the Core is playing and you can see the seconds ticking by in the now playing screen then the problem isn't the Core.

Did you try restarting your NDAC? Also worth checking the cable between the Core and the NDAC is in properly (pull it out both ends and plug it in again before you turn the NDAC on again.)

Also I assume you are looking at the Core screens in the app? You can't control the spdif output of the Core from a streamer screen. You have to be using upnp (which you aren't).

Well it was all working fine yesterday and not touched anything apart from the app to listen to music, but noting is playing. I have not touched any cables it just stopped and the sync/hd lights on the dac went out. I powered on and off, but have not attempted the cable suggestion yet.

Yes but computers always work fine until they suddenly don't. Both the Core and the NDAC are computers basically.

it sounds like the NDAC isn't seeing the signal from the Core. That might be the Core, the NDAC or the cable. Restarting the Core and the NDAC is the first thing to do and waggling or unplugging the lead between them is the next.

Have you tried clearing the queue in the Core and selecting another album, for example one that worked ok yesterday?

Also when you restarted the Core, was this a mains power off wait a couple of minutes and then restart sort of restart, or just pressing the on/off switch quickly (which basically just puts it into network sleep) or a long press that shuts most of it down?

Yes, i tried different albums and went through Artists as well. I only did the power off at the back of the dac then switched back on, so I have unplugged everyhting before going to work this morning. I will try again tonight, but will unplug all leads etc and see what happens. Had loads of problems with the android app crashing which have been posted to Naim, but this issue seems a bit more serious. Fingers crossed it will fix itself, so me computers do that Could it be due to the DAC getting stuck in an odd state so won't play anything.

I doubt it. I've never heard of it doing that, but I don't have an NDAC myself so I'm not familiar with every foible.

Anyway if you post back here how you get on, no doubt there will be other folk along with suggestions.

If the sync and HD lights are out on the DAC but the Core appears to be working fine then it's probably a connection problem.  S/pdif cables can be very sensitive - even just touching them can result in losing sync lock. What cable are you using?  Are you using any adaptors?

Does your DAC work if you feed it with a signal from another source? Just run a cable from your TV, disc player, computer SPDIF output, etc. and check first if your dac works!

I very much doubt it but, if you have switched off the display lights of your nDAC as I usually do, you might have perhaps accidentally selected a different input.

Thanks everybody for your help and avdice. I unplugged everything, then removed all connections and started again. Following powerup everything started working again so it's probably the cable issue. I connect from the Unity Core to the dac directly using the Naim supplied lead. Looks like a BNC type connector. Do I need to upgrade it? I did not turn the sync/hd lights out they just went off and the music stopped. Anyway it's working for today Thanks

Very good!

If it goes on working I would leave well alone. You can get oxidation or surface dirt on a lead and unplugging/plugging often sorts that out. The Naim lead is fine. You could upgrade it but it will be expensive to do so and personally I doubt that you would hear a difference unless the lead is actually faulty.
