Advise on how to clean dirty NAC82 volume control

Posted by: Hui on 15 November 2017

It appears that I've got myself a dirty potentiometer on a used NAC82 I bought, any advise on how to clean it? Should I attempt it myself or have a qualified dealer do it? Thanks.

Before you start opening up the casing, have you tried rotating the knob up and down from min to max a few times? After turning the power off, of course!

You can try that with the power on, so long as nothing is playing or the mute is turned on.

If you need to ask then I think you may have already answered this one yourself.

If the method Chris suggest doesn't work then i'd look at getting the 82 serviced by a Naim service agent.

Thanks guys! Yeah I tried the rotating method but it didn't resolve the issue. I'll reach out to my dealer.

Call me paranoid, I prefer not to take the chance of an embarrassing accident!

I have generally found with noisy pots that multiple rapid rotating from stop to stop often does the job (power amp off or speakers disconnected). I don't know about this particular model, but if the pot is accessible and not sealed then a stubborn one can sometimes be cured by spraying a little switch cleaner (available from electronics components suppliers like Maplin) into it then more multiple rapid totating can work, otherwise it is usually replacement of the pot.

yeah, I tried rotating it and there is still some noise. I tried a couple more times and it went away now.

Consider changing it anyway as it will be worn

It will make a noticeable difference

The problem commonly arises after a period of non-use, rather than wear, e.g. after a period of storage. That possibly could include the preamp being used but volume control not, as could be the case with some people's usage habits.
