Audio Technica AT-637 - Ultrasonic Stylus Cleaner?
Posted by: Bob the Builder on 18 November 2017
I have just bought one of these on eBay to clean my Benz Micro Ace does anyone have experience with them and are they best used dry without cleaner?
I would use it dry up to 5-10 minutes. However, I would first ask Benz Micro what their advice is here, as I know that some cartridge manufacturers warn against using vibrating stylus cleaners.
I only use my AT637 fairly seldom - usually as a maintenance cycle every few months. Otherwise, if I just want to give a quick clean then I get out my trusty old Discwasher brush, (sometimes I put a drop of cleaner on and then wait a moment for it to soak away off the top of the brush), then brush from the back of the stylus to the front a few times.
Had mine for many years, they're about the best method for cleaning a stylus. You can use a very small drop of cleaning fluid, you've just got to be careful this doesn't creep up the cantilever where it might affect the glue. Quite OK to use dry.
I always used mine dry, just to be on the safe side, and fairly infrequently. As Richard says, best to check with the cartridge manufacturer just in case, although I never had any problem with any of my (mainly Linn) cartridges over the years. I also had a Dishwasher brush (was it called an SC2?) which I found better for everyday use, especially if there was any visible gunge or fluff on the stylus.
Dynavector advise against using them. But used mine regularly on my other stylus and always okay.
I use it dry and 10 - 20 seconds is sufficient with a strong battery.

I also used mine with a DV, no problem. If you consider the pretty gentle vibration this device administers and compare it to what happens to the stylus as it tracks a loud rock album...

Tony, have you ever tried using the AT637 with the volume at head banging level? Just curious, as it's something I managed to avoid, but I always imagined that the results might not be good - even compared to heavy metal!
Also had mine for years and also have the Audio technical cleaning fluid AT 607 which is effective useing it on the pad of the cleaner when the stylus tip is very gunky.
Mainly use dry for a minute once a week.
Nice product.

Yes, of course I have! Just a loud buzz.
Dry here too, 10-20 seconds and infrequently. Green stuff two or three times each week though.
Stu
used one for decades . the stylus gets complex vibrations every time you play a record.but since buying a vpi record cleaner only use occasional. did know you could still buy them
I bought a used one a while back but sold it on without using it. I couldn't bring myself to risk dropping my $3000 stylus into an unknown mess of old dirt and gunk that must have collected on the fiber pad from the previous user. A bit like wearing old, used, dirty, unwashed underwear!!!

Turn it upside down and turn it on? It should self clean, shouldn't it?
I have only ever used mine dry and this is what I do.
Some good advice from lot's of 'old hand's' I'm waiting for advice from Benz which will of course help to determine my use of the AT but in my line of work I find the advice of the very experienced always to be an invaluable tool.
Just gave my Benz Micro Ace it's first clean with the AT and then gave my Analogue Productions copy of Muddy Waters - Folk Singer a spin and I have to say it has made a very noticable difference I had also given the record a clean too and there is a crispness to the acoustic guitar especially the fret work that I haven't heard before (no barking dog though) and I would recommend one of these little gizmo's to anybody who is serious about playing records.
I know I probably paid too much but for me it was £25 well spent.
Glad it has worked out well for you. £25 is a good price. I've seen them sell for much more.
Now it's time to seek out an example of my favourite classic vinyl accessory, the wonderful Technics SH-50P1 Stylus Pressure Gauge.
PS.
Just heard back fron Benz and they can recommend using the above with their stylus.
