Well, I cannot call these records of the year in any sense as I have 82 albums saved in my 2017 folder and haven't found time yet to listen to some of them.  And that is a small number compared to music released in 2017.  The system is on 8-10 hours a day typically but I have the 2014-2016 folders I listen to alot and my music collection dating back to 1985 when I abandoned vinyl (many replaced on newer formats) and anything else in my listening history on Spotify.  But these few 2017 rentals seem to be on the system with some regularity.

Elbow  -  "Little Fictions" ***  Alison Krause  -  "Windy City" *** Nadia Reid  -  "Preservation" *** Rodney Crowell  -  "Close Ties" *** Aimee Mann  -  "Mental Illness" *** Imelda May  -  "Life Love Flesh Blood" *** LP  -  "Lost On You" *** Matthew Ryan  -  "Hustle Up Starlings" *** Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit  -  "The Nashville Sound" *** Offa Rex  -  "The Queen Of Hearts" *** Portugal. The Man  -  "Woodstock" *** The War On Drugs  -  "A Deeper Understanding" *** The Barr Brothers  -  "The Queens Of The Breakers" *** Robert Plant  -  "Carry Fire" *** Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile  -  "Lotta Sea Lice" ***

Bold items are my favorites that I have heard in 2017 releases.  Sound is not a consideration, there is not enough time remaining in my life for that to be deciding factor.  Too much music to listen to for sound-staging and resolution to be a concern.  Thanks for all the knowledge from the contributors to the "Listening to...." thread.  Rental music rules.  regards, Jeff A

Seasons  greetings to all forum-ites.

Not posted for a while due to other preoccupations.

It’s been a good year for a huge variety of new music for me and ECM now being available on Tidal has been the icing on the cake.

Like others, Ive pretty much fully embraced streaming now, having bought only a handful of CDs / downloads this year.  Mixed feelings about this, but the convenience, SQ and vfm (@£20 / mo on Tidal) are a compelling combination when it opens up so much new stuff to try.

My top 5 below fwiw.

Offa Rex - Queen of Hearts

No contest for me, my most played album of the year by a long chalk. Beautiful singing by Olivia Chaney, great playing by the Decemberists and outstanding production. Standout Track - “The Gardener” - a real ear worm.

Chris Stapleton - From a Room Volumes 1 & 2

This chap can’t put a foot wrong at the moment, 3 great albums in quick succession.

Anouar Brahem - Blue Maqams

I sometimes found his previous classic “Thimar” a little dry, but on this, the addition of Django Bates’ lovely piano playing, subtly colouring the sound, is absolutely great. Some real groovy moments on this one.

Rodney Crowell - Close Ties

Not an artist I’ve been familiar with at all, but this autobiographical look-back over his musical career is choc full of good songs, playing and production. Much played this year.

Rhiannon Giddens - Freedom Highway

Another new artist for me. Worth the price of entry for the exquisite “We Could Fly” alone.

Honourable mentions also include;
Leo Richardson - The Chase
Richard Thompson - Acoustic Classics ll
Tommy Smith - Embodying the Light
Shelby Lynne - Not Dark Yet

Cheers

Nick

I must be a creature of habit, as I keep coming back to Dave Gilmore - Live At Pompeii. What a pressing. Currently playing Time/Comfortably Numb, 16 mins spread across the whole final side and it shows. Sounds amazing.
