S1 Running in, Ups and Downs!!
Posted by: RICHYH on 24 November 2017
Two weeks ago I took delivery of the S1 pre amp, replacing my tried and trusted 552 after many years of fantastic music. Many thanks to Audio T for excellent service and installation as always.
From cold, it was good, with all the tonal qualities of the 552 with a little more bass definition and a little sweeter in the treble. My system is active 500 drs and S800, so it should be good.
Four days in, it was outstanding, the music was totally effortless and more "real" than I have ever heard. I think this was the 1st time I felt the Super Lumina was fully justified, as everything gelled perfectly. It was excellent.
Moving on to last night and 3 days without being able to listen, 13 days in from installation and the disappointment. It was lackluster in comparison, lacking definition. It had lost the sweet spot
I am not worried (yet) but it would be nice if Darke Bear or others in a similar situation would tell of their experiences.
Thanks

Of all the things you could feel guilty about buying a hi-fi is surely not one.

Sorry to ask but how do you upload photos?
Posted on: 25 November 2017 by Darke Bear
You post them on a separate photo-sharing site and then post the link into the 'insert image' feature - well that is how I do it. There are several free sites for this sort of thing.

Just so Allante. I recently switched to Imgur to post pics here and it seems to work well - for free.

Skinny Fraim rack in the first pic? Inquiring minds want to know!
Posted on: 26 November 2017 by RICHYH
Ah, I knew this would happen.
It's a Well tempered with Mastergroove SR.
Obviously, I had to have the frame woods re-made narrow to fit other things in. On it are 2 power supplies one for pp Ethernet switch and ultrarendu.
Under the settee is the master groove power supply and the snaxo bmr and ps.

Love the Skinny Fraim!
You have given me some evil ideas....
Great to see a system that looks like it is used a lot - as it should be.

What do you mean "used a lot" what gives you that idea, is it messy? Believe me, with 3 children, not as much as I'd like or used to.
Posted on: 26 November 2017 by Darke Bear
Apologies - I construed the close proximity of stacks of CDs and Vinyl close to the players as evidence of use. Statement does need to be used - when it is all run-in of course.
Are the SNAXO and its supply on a shelf - or otherwise?

Also, I have the correct size glass for the mastergroove coming this week.
I have been looking at plugging the turntable flying leads directly into the mastergroove and save on a connection and lead.

DB. No apologies needed. I was curious and worried I had left my underpants exposed!!!!
The Snaxo bmr and ps are under the settee on a fraim bases. Dont ask for pictures under there!!

You have a solid floor - or is it suspended?
Posted on: 26 November 2017 by RICHYH
Posted on: 26 November 2017 by Darke Bear
Good for you! You can get a way with a lot more on a good solid floor.
I have to contend with a suspended floor, albeit reinforced. The S800 can pack a lot of LF energy into the floor and the Fraim can get more isolation duty.
Once the S1 comes on-song again after run-in let us all know!

Cheers DB
It has been pretty good this weekend.
I am noticing warm up and different recording qualities more than ever.

Richhy-That shoebox sized Fraim is awesome!!

I’m intrigued by the photos of the system. Having stood next to S800s, I know that they are absolutely huge. Yet next to the fireplace they look quite modestly sized. So the fireplace must be even more huge. I’d really like to see a picture of the OP standing between them, to put everything in proportion. I think it’s great to see a big and very posh setup in a proper room, rather than some sterile hifi shrine with a single chair. It’s all very nice.

Thanks Hungryhalibut. Yes it is a large fire place. They are 7ft apart, I noticed the picture is a bit curved and the 500's look small too on the bottom left with the PS's in the alcove behind the speaker. There is no way you will get me in the photo though.
Cheers

Ooh, go on. I’m sure you are incredibly suave and elegant and would cut a real dash leaning languorously on one of the speakers, glass of wine in hand.

When I read that I immediately thought of Del-Boy leaning against the (not there) bar in Only Fools & Horses..... I've not met you Richyh nor am I implying anything about you - just a funny thought which sprang to mind - hopefully there is no chandelier overhead either.....

Hello Rich
hope the S1 is in song now
one thing I forgot to ask when I saw you was did you consider any of the Vitus offerings before taking the plunge with the S1, I ask cos 2 of the 3 people I’ve had dealings with this year that were selling a 552 went that way.
your old amp is singing very nicely now, surprised how heavy the preamp section is, anyway I don’t want to lower the tone of this thread by talking about budget stuff
