Profile content

I appreciate it's not, nor should it be, mandatory, but the number of contributors who decline, or simply can't be bothered, to include details of their system within their profile amazes me.

Whenever a member is critical or judgemental about another's opinion, or choice, of a piece of equipment (in particular loudspeakers or cables) I always find it interesting to look at their preferences, which are often not mentioned in the thread. I can't give percentages, but it's quite a number who make no reference to what they own.

I suppose this could be a Padded Cell thread, but I've begun it here as it relates specifically to Hi-Fi equipment. I'm hoping it may act as a spur to some who perhaps have simply overlooked the matter. I'm sure there will be some who disagree, and say it has no relevance.

I agree Tim it is always nice to look at someones profile and see they have included system details it gives a bit more detail to peoples opinion.

Especially when one seeks advice, one should provide system details. It puzzles me when people ask for help, but aren’t bothered to provide the information for meaningful advice...

Its just as well to show it if offering abvice too.

Agreed. I realise people can put whatever they choose in their profile, but it normally gives a reasonable steer as to whether they're talking from experience or just, as seems often to be the case, regurgitating second or third hand opinion picked up from pub, show, dealer........or quoting verbatim from the hi-fi press.

Good prompt for me to update mine!

Agreed.  A few posters seem to feel it their duty to criticise any new Naim product as soon as it is announced.  This often degenerates into finding endless faults with Naim itself and even dissing thread contributors who support Naim.  I always look at the profile of such posters and if, as is nearly always the case, it is empty, my default is to regard them as trolls and ignore their contributions.

I too would find it helpful if people included their system details. So frequently people ask about a system change and it would be so much easier if the details were there. Location is another one. There’s no point suggesting an audition at the local dealer if someone is in a place without any. It also helps with the various mains related questions.

Of course, what is in one’s profile now is only half the story, as people may have had very different equipment in the past, but nonetheless it’s a good guide.

I very much agree with HH here. Just re-read what he wrote .

Everyone on the internet lies anyway, so I don't actually believe anyone's profile.

Surely not? If you were going to lie I'm sure you'd have gifted yourself a better system!!

I thought you had an active Statement set-up, Kevin.

I did, but Mrs K (who, as you all know, is otherwise better known as Marion Cotillard) said there were too many boxes cluttering up our gorgeous £30m Thameside penthouse apartment. If I didn't get rid of most of them, she said she was going to leave me for my best friend, Brad (Pitt).

I didn't want to go though the emotional trauma of getting dumped again (back in the day, both Uma Thurman and Christina Hendricks chucked me because they said I was more interested in my record collection than them).

Given that I'm still paying through the nose for my acrimonious divorce from Angelina, the spare cash I got from flogging off those Statement power units came in handy - meant I didn't have sell my precious Lambo Miura P400.

I just asked for some help here and did put system info in the request and my profile is up to date but I was a bit uncertain about mentioning some non naim equipment that cannot be named and whether or not that would preclude me from getting a helpful response. It didn’t and I totally agree with the general point made but just to say there may be a range of reasons why people don’t complete their system profiles.

i shall thank the responders on the relevant thread!

Wanted to update my profile, but can’t seem to expand the system profile box beyond the one line that is shown initially.

Any advice on how to get my whole system description to be shown?

Thanks for any suggestions!

I've just tried editing mine, and the box will scroll left as you continue typing, with the first characters scrolling out of sight.

When you've entered all your info, just save the edited profile, which will then appear with as many lines as are needed.

Create the profile in Notepad or similar app, then Copy and Paste it in.  I did.

Think I've worked out that your signature only appears when you make a New Post/Topic

While you’re making a clean breast of it Kevin, how about admitting the full extent of your extensive collection of Mrs. Mills bootlegs (including, I’m led to believe, the notoriously x-rated “Let’s Have Another Key-swapping Party”).
