HDX Noise

Posted by: David S Patterson on 25 November 2017

Hi, I have an HDX on home loan demo, and nice it sounds , but I can hear a high pitched sound with  no music playing, which can just be heard over very low level music eg night time playing. The sound is from the unit not the speakers, almost like the noise from a TV. This is not loud but is noticable in the room to different degrees depending on node boost. Everything is working perfect.is this s characteristic of this unit.

Thanks

There are 2 disks inside so the noice from the one active disk is unavoidable. there is also a fan but that should not be on only in rare situations to prevent the unit running too hot. My ns01 that is almost identical is about 3 meters away and even when nothing is playing I cannot here it. I have to be very close to the unit to hear it.

I have never heard such a noise from my HDX and I seem quite sensitive to such high frequency sounds (or so I'm told)

Thanks, there is a definite high whine from the unit when doing nothing, and it's not the fan.

Damn, its  my perfect product, but can't live with this high pitched whine, at least my hearing range is still decent.

I sold my HDX earlier in the year (2TB model), I don't remember ever hearing a high pitched sound from it. Maybe check'with the dealer, it doesn’t seem right.

A high pitched whine doesn’t sound like the fan or hard drive, I suspect a fault. You should get your dealer to check it.

Like Claus I too have an NS01 which bears many similarities to the HDX. Mine does indeed emit a noise, even when not playing, which is the active HDD spinning. It's not what I'd call a very high pitch, but is exactly the same as the noise emitting from my PC hard disc. Fortunately though I do not hear it when playing music as it is located in another room.

No need to worry: I used to own a HDX and mine also produced that noise - it is one of the hard drives spinning. Mine was one of the earlier versions with 2 x 400GB drives. I’ve considered converting to SSD, but in the end I’ve put all my music on a NAS.

My first Unitiserve made a constant whirring noise, possibly the drive, and it was too loud to tolerate in the listening room, so I put it elsewhere. The replacement unit I now have is totally silent when not in use. This is not the high pitched whine the OP is complaining of, though.

Probably your HDX on loan my friend. I bought a second hand one, old version and only the drives were audible. After an upgrade to the 2Tb version with RAM, that sound has gone.  In my view this is the best Naim source because one has ones Music all stored locally with no reliable on NAS or the Internet.

I've tried to analyse it I recon 12000hz, is that a frequency anything would run at.

I want to love it,  it certainly sounds good but the high pitched noise is driving me crazy.

That sounds like a fault, what does the dealer say about it?

Still to report back to dealer, only picked up Saturday,  been away today, but yes it is the drives as when I put into standby they slow down to stop and the frequency drops away with them (it)

You can always consider keeping the HDX and get it converted to SSD in the future. Obviously, you need a NAS to store your music, but you’ll have an excellent source which IMHO is more flexible than the Uniti Core ...
