Naim App on Android - Inactivity problems

Posted by: paulj on 28 November 2017

Hi,

I am running a 300/272 and controlling using the Android app. My first phone was very slow, and I would get problems when things just grind to a halt. I bought a new phone which is much faster so expected the Naim App to be smooth. It is not, the problem I get is when the phone blanks the screen for inactivity (30 seconds by default), when you access the screen again to wake it up. The screen does not restore, it gets the naim app to completly reload, and fails because it notices another app is connected. So when you browse to other app, you open it, and straight away you get to the screen at the point when inactivivty started.

Can anyone help please ?

Thanks,

Paul

Have you tried the <Stay Connected> setting?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, I should add that I am connecting to a upnp server. Yes I found that option and tried it, did not make any difference.

Have you contacted Naim support for help?

Hi Richard,

Not on this issue with the Naim App, but have through my retailer on another issue with no response.

I came across the support article on the web site, and was planning to get in touch with them by email.

Have been thinking of maybe getting a video of the problem

Best Regards,

Paul

Which phone device do you have: Especially the RAM size (not the flash memory!) could be interesting. If it is not enough and you have many other apps installed, it might be a problem that the naim app gets kicked out of the memory and must be restarted afterwards?

Also it might be interesting to exclude the app from battery management optimization. (translated from the german settings GUI in Android 6.0. It might be called different today.) This allows the app to run in the background even if the device switches to the sleep mode.

Good idea Paul.  The more info you can provide the better.

I spoke to naim about this very issue at the recent signals show

I was told ...it's just one of those things, the app won't reconnect to the same session when it goes to sleep

I now leave my phone always on ( no sleep) and plug it in to a long lead so it's on my lap while listening... problem gone ...but not ideal

I thought I replied to this already but my post hasn't appeared!

It isn't "one of those things".Most users aren't reporting this. I swapped posts with one of the app developers at Naim just now and she said they have had this reported before but can't reproduce it in Salisbury.

So it would be a good idea for (both of!) you to report this problem to Naim support and ask them to pass on the info to @Vimion . I think Gert's ideas are good too and do give Naim as much info about your phones, Android version, network configuration and upnp server as you can. No doubt a video or screen shots would be welcomed there too.

best

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies, I will report it. I also have another android device arriving soon, a samsung tablet.

My new phone is a Moto G5 Amazon Edition which has 3GB Ram, the Naim app was the first app I installed. I notice in the options you can substitute sd ram for internal ram. I have not used that option, but gives me the scope to upgrade it substantially to check for memory issues.

Thanks for your work-around solution, far from ideal I agree, but this problem is very frustrating. I have done some searching, and have found apps which allow you to disable sleep for a particular app. I couldn't find a really good one, but I found there is a developer option to disable sleep when charging. To get to this you need to enable developer mode on your phone by tapping the Android build number in the About phone settings. So you need to plug charging cable when using, that just seems ironic for a streamer with hefty wireless capability.

Hi PaulJ, just saw your thread. I and a couple of other Android users have reported this to Naim Support also and it has been logged. But as David said, they are struggling to reproduce. I'm sure it will get fixed in due course, but that's no help for now unfortunately.
