Phono Board MC Nac 62

Posted by: vilco on 30 November 2017

Hi

I recently bought a NAC 62 with Phono 323/5 MC cards, unfortunately with my Denon dl 103 cartridge, I do get a very gloomy sound, perhaps because of the absence of the step-up I used with non-Naim devices.
I currently have only MM heads I wonder if you can use these cartridge on MC cards or risk something.

Best Regards

You really do need the correct phono boards for your cartridge. So you either need to change the boards, or get a MC cartridge.

Don't use a Moving Magnet cartridge on MC boards - their output is way too high and you will overload the boards.

What do you mean for "modify" the phono Board?

Thank You

If you have a Denon DL103 then that should work ok into NA323 boards - I've used one with a Prefix K before.  The loading probably isn't ideal but it sounds fine.

When you say gloomy, what do you mean?  The Naim boards are quite a "dark" sound and the standard 103 is not at all bright, and very strong in the bass, so perhaps you are looking for brighter?  What arm and deck are you using with the 103? It's far from a universal cartridge and really needs the right arm to perform at its best.

on the back of the pre phono side is indicated the letter N
the phono board are 323/3 ( are you sure it is MC Board?)
Effectively the sound is very dark, not open, maybe I should change the cartridge.

Thanx

N doesn't sound right. N is usually applied to NA322 MM boards.

How many big round Capacitors are there? 2 or 3?

2 Capacitors...

OK, so they are NA323 boards.  However, if they are series 3 then they're very old and probably past their best. Have they been serviced at all?  Really I would be looking for NA323/4 or better yet, NA323/5 boards.
