Stageline/Flatcap 2/Nait XS configuration

Posted by: Lar on 04 December 2017

Hi Folks

I have just sold my old 90/92 and replaced with Nait XS (not XS 2) and bought a stageline which is connected through Nait for power supply. I have a Flatcap 2 powering my CD 5 at the moment.

Q's

Is there any benefit in powering the stageline from the FC rather than the Nait?

I am led to believe I will need to buy another interconnect to do the above with a 5 pin/4 pin configuration? These are about another £120.00 so a) is this correct and b) is it worth doing?

Any straightforward advice/information welcome and thank you in advance

Lar

With a Flatcap 2 you have some options here; you could stick with things as they are now - in which case all the benefit of the FC2 is going to the analog output stage of the CD5.  Or, you could use Output A of the FC2 on the NAIT XS pre-amp (additional SNAIC 4 & 5 needed), with Output B still on the CD5, and the Stageline being fed from AUX 2 on the NAIT.  Or, you could have Output A of the FC2 on the Stageline (existing SNAIC 5 and additional 4-5 interconnect needed) and Output B still on the CD5, with the NAIT just as it is.  As to which is best will probably boil down to your priorities.  Unfortunately I have never actually demoed a NAIT xs so couldn't really give a useful opinion here.

Thank you Richard

I must admit to being confused by interconnects with NAIM. Am I right in thinking the standard interconnect that came with stageline is signal only  and that is why I will need a 4pin/5pin ?

Although Aux 2 is power out assume that without the correct interconnect, (4/5) it is just providing a signal to the Stageline ?

By the way the Nait XS is a massive improvement on the 90/92 which needed re-capping and I just didn't think it was worth spending the money

Lar, the Stageline comes with a SNAIC5 which carries both signal and 2 x 24v DC.  This is what is needed for connection to the powered AUX2 input (signal in and 2 x 24V DC out).

However, if connecting the Stageline to a dedicated PSU then you need both the SNAIC5 and a 4-5 interconnect.   The latter carries signal to the pre-amp input.

Thanks Richard

I listen to too many people due to uncertainty in what I am doing - was told the standard snaic was just signal by Witch Hat Audio hence my comment so thanks for clarifying.

Had to order 4 pin to 5 pin interconnect so will advise when in situ

I play more vinyl than CD's so will probably favour powering the stageline from the FC 2

Lar, has the FC2 been serviced at all?

Not sure Richard to be honest  ? if not, would that change suggested configuration? and is it worth spending money to have it  serviced?

I am still having this problem with hum from Rega TT but have pretty much come to the conclusion it is from the transformer in CD5 so will see if moving it further away from TT helps. It has that reported problem I have seen on the Forum of hum when the arm is on the rest which goes if you move the arm to the centre of the record. The cartridge, Elys 2  sits right above the transformer in the CD 5 .

Alternatively thought it might be an earth problem in arm - really annoyed at Rega dealer who won't look at it because the cartridge was fitted by another dealer in Merseyside. Was happy to pay for them to check wiring out but flat out refused to even look at it. ( I live in Yorkshire so not trekking over to Liverpool - don't think I will be using them for the P6 and cartridge upgrade I am considering!!

Once again thanks for your succinct responses and help

Just be aware that it may not perform as well as it should if it hasn't been serviced.  Maybe have a chat with the factory or even Class A (less expensive) on service cost.

As for the hum, it may well be from the CD5 being too close to the TT.  I tend to keep the two (including the phono stage away from anything digital or with a PSU) as far apart as I can to keep noise at a minimum.
