Swiss Army Knife Nac 272 - why do people sell it?

Posted by: Ardbeg10y on 07 December 2017

I've been watching the various topics on this forum regarding the 272 and I cannot get around the impression that it is very popular for most of the users.

Nevertheless, it pops up frequently on online marketplaces and as ex-demo / trade-in at dealers. Always at least a handful available.

Why do people sell it if it is so great?

Ardbeg (who is trying to resist the temptation to buy one in 2017).

I'm led to believe that it has been a very successful product indeed for Naim. I'd imagine that the majority of the many Naim dealers have one on demo and any demo unit would likely be "turned over" after a year or so.

Simple logic would suggest that if lots are purchased new then (comparitively) lots will appear S/H as folks get the urge to ‘trade up’.

Maybe because it’s an overhyped pile of crap? What answer do you want?

Probably because they are upgrading to the 'Blimey' version.

I see what Nigel did there. Reverse psychology: he's been doing it for years with The smiths!

I thought the blimey version is to keep the 272 and add the 555 PSU

What serial number does this version start? I need to check mine to see if I'm going to upgrade of not.

Well yes.  But what other answer us there?  People sell them because there is something better. Like, durrr. It’s bloody obvious.

I doubt the 272 itself is a pile of overhyped crap. (although I get your point, it does seem overhyped).

I suspect a lot of 272 users have come to the conclusion digital streaming is a pile of overhyped crap. Others think its the best thing since sliced bread. No right or wrong, just personal choice.

Yourrrrrrr're good!

Why do they sell them? So that poor gods like me get to feed on manna crumbs form the rich gods' tables.

Some people are never happy with what they’ve got. It’s not just the 272, it’s everything they buy.

I sold mine because I never bought it.

That and instructions from a piece of toast with Our Lord's face on it.

I’ve missed Adam’s biting wit. Welcome back!

Need to add not only a 555DR but also a 300DR to get the Blimey version.

Itchy types buy hyped hi-fi, more than steady blokes like me, HH, and Hook.  Some, like us, stay put.

No shame, either way.

272 till 372!

There must be dozens of reasons why kit gets moved on..

From people buying stuff they cannot really afford and needing to sell ... through those that love it but want more ..and hence upgrade...to those that don't really gel with it at all ..for whatever reason...and want shot of it

It is a popular pre...and fairly affordable..so there will always be a few up for grabs for the next few years..like nap 250s ... always plenty about

Nigel,

I may be a total misunderstander of people and you a subtle reader of souls and intentions, but plain, simple questions do exist. Happiness and paranoia have no way to live in the same apartment. You are happy with your 272, don't waste time being aggressive with a guy who's asked a legitimate question.

Friendly,

Max

BTW, here we are talking of the 272 again. The really funny thing is, that this hype about it was somehow started by HH, who enjoys a large amount of credit from this audience (flocks need a shepherd, after all) but he's usually the most susceptible about the subject. Why? As I wrote, why happiness and paranoia together?

Nigel, this has nothing to do with our friendship, but may our Lord and Naim release a 372 soon, so its obsolete father will be forgotten for a little while.

P.P.S.S. Swiss Army Knives are usually useless: who has actually opened a can of beans or saved his own life in a wood with one? They only have a beautiful point of red. And their scissors are not even good for nails.

I think we may have a fair wait for a 372. More likely a 500 series streamer and then the normal Naim trickle down of technology into for some of us, more affordable streamers.

Posted on: 08 December 2017 by Ardbeg10y

No worries on the comment of HH, absolutely fine.

It is indeed a simple question, which can be answered by an obvious answer.

Simple questions do exist and they need to be asked, if we did not, the Roman Catholic church was still ruling the world.

But ...

I understand why people part exchange a Nap 100 by a Nap 200 or so. Or move up from nac 202 to nac 282, or go from SN to separates. Or change Naim for another Brand. It's all logical from hifi perspective - if 'logical' is a word which can be used in context of hifi.

Then there are non-hifi related options, like people having debts which needs to be sorted, divorce, etc ...

I believe that the 272 is indeed hyped - read all topics on this forum. But this hype is for a reason, and in such cases a hype is no problem. Bitcoin is a real hype - there is no real value behind it. If the hype is used to leverage the success of the 272: good job!

Some did already post these options on this topic or elsewhere.

But say one buys a 272 and feels the itch to move up then the PS / Nap upgrades are most obvious and can bring one to say 252 level.

Despite this most obvious upgrade option, it seems that quite frequently people want to get rid of their 272 within the first year. These young 272 pops up often.

Maybe the original question needs to remain unanswered because the - correct - answers do not satisfy me and the question is just an exposure of unbelieve.

Wasn't the Swiss Army knife supplanted decades ago by the Leatherman and its various spin-offs, at least for functionality?

The 272 seems to me fit for its purpose in the near-term. If I was considering one I'd look at the ex-dems and s/h re-sales as a boon, and take advantage of those prices. Happy to let someone that bought new and changed their mind take the hit for the initial price.
