LP12 Upgrades?
Posted by: Bob the Builder on 11 December 2017
I have a standard issue LP12 circa 1990 that apart from cartridges has only ever had one upgrade the Cirkus bearing. Next year I was intending to spend a bit of money upgrading the deck and when I say a bit I mean a bit so Keel, Stiletto and anything in that bracket are not a possibility for me.
At present I have an Ittock LV II, a Benz Micro Ace SL (which I've only just got) and a Lingo Mk1. So what advice do you have about what I should do ? I have around £1,000 to spend and buying used isn't an issue for me.
Has the Lingo been serviced?
Has the Lingo been modded to make it "play better" with your Naim equipment?
How much do actually use the LP12 compared to other sources?
The Ittok is a great arm and if the cartridge is good, I'd stick with it as upgrading will likely blow all of your budget and then some!
A Kore sub chassis as well as a full service is the obvious suggestion. Just one problem you will have to have the Kore drilled for the Ittok arm rest.
I've tried so many upgrades over the past few years...many blind ally's too
And by far the biggest single upgrade for me ( over sub chassis , power supplies, DC motor etc) was
Tangerine top plate
There you have it....I've saved you thousands in wasted time and parts
You can thank me when you try it ....
Service the Lingo or upgrade it to the Linog 3, followed by Kore. Nitrous is correct about drilling the hole, but this would only be a problem if you plan to upgrade the arm in the future. Linn do a blanking plug so it’s not a major issue, just cosmetic.
Radikal is probably the best upgrade now but it is above your budget. Can you save and wait a bit?

The Tiger Paw Tranquility takes some beating for the reasonable investment; for such a brilliant and effective piece of engineering.

I have heard will be coming out with another upgrade for the LP12 in January. I have no idea what it will be, but I think something is coming.
I think Blythe may have touched on this above, but you can remove the Lingo’s filtered mains inlet and replace it with an unfiltered one. It makes a big difference if using with Naim. Another idea, which is what I did when I changed from the Lingo 1, is to think about an Armageddon. It only plays at 33 though, so is no good if you have 45s, unless you are happy to keep removing the platter and adding the larger pulley to the motor. The Armageddon gave a much better sound than the Lingo, with much more boogie and drive.
Thanks everyone the Lingo service and mains mod sounds a very real possibility but I believe Linn have withdrawn support for the Lingo 1 I have emailed Darren at Class A to see if this affects his ability to service the Lingo or do the mains mod.
Hopefully still a possibilty because at £115 + p&p it is a reasonable upgrade and this along with a Kore or Tranquility maybe the way to go.

Sound like a sensible approach to me! Hope it works out. I think I read somewhere Darren does repairs mk1lingos so you should be fine.
Bob, I recently (about 3 months ago) had my Lingo 1 serviced by Darran at Class A, including the removal of the filtered mains inlet and I am very pleased with the result.
My LP12 dates from 1983, when I bought it from Hampshire Audio. In the 80’s I/we had Nirvana and Valhalla upgrades, then the Zeta arm and a couple of Audio Technical cartridges. And there it remained for twenty years as we moved into CD.
So a couple of years ago I decided it was time to get it going again, and did the following very modest upgrades (mostly courtesy of a well known auction site yada yada)
1. Lingo 1: fitted it myself. The change in sound was quite astonishing (akin to adding an HC to my 102). The most readily noticeable effect was the drop in noise floor, clearly heard on the lead in/out area, which, one would assume, would carry forward into the music area.
2. Trampolin 1: again fitted by myself, and again a very noticeable improvement, mainly in the treble area.
3. Had it serviced/fettled by Phil Marsh of Phonography. He did a lovely job of polishing up the beast and it sounded very fine as well - the performance in the bass region being very notable!
Will I go further? Probably not, but it Is a keeper.

Darran serviced and did the mains mod' on my own Lingo 1 earlier this year
Thanks Blythe what were the noticeble differences after the Lingo had come back fromm Class A? I conntacted Darran and with p&p the service and mod comes in about £180 so not a bad price.

Hi Suzy Wong,
Thanks for your reply was your deck on a wall shelf or a rack when you fitted the Trampolin? My deck was given the once over at Audio T in Brighton (who are great by the way) about a year ago so think I'm ok on that front for a bit .

Thanks HH,
I would love to try a Naim prefix and an Armageddon because I'm sure it would sound great but I have lots of 45's and also a few half mastered 45rpm LP's and I remember pre Lingo having to keep putting the 45 adapter on too much messing around.
BANG!!!!!
Although the Tranquility is good a Lingo 3 is by far the bigger improvement (in my system of course) of the two though both are worth having.
I replaced my filterless (previously called the "Weekes modified") Lingo 1 with a Lingo 3 and didn't hear much difference. YMMV.
I had the original Lingo fitted to my LP12/ARO/Troika combination but changed it for an Armageddon when it was released. The Armageddon worked really well with my 72/Supercap/250. It seemed to give me an extra octave in the bass!
