iPAD or iPAD Pro
Posted by: The Strat (Fender) on 12 December 2017
Guys,
Am pretty unknowing on this stuff but wish to stay in the Apple domain as I use an iMac and iPhone and am very content with both.
Over and above that the Pro has a bigger screen what more do I get.
My main usage will be reading journals and books, reviewing photos etc
Experiences and comment welcome.
Regards,
Lindsay
I have the pro model, it’s faster, better screen, but also much more expensive. There is a comparison review in Macworld if you google for iPad Pro vs iPad review, seems a fairly unbiased view.

IPad Pro can be used with a dedicated keyboard and a Apple pencil. It also has better built in speakers
I use both of those features on regular basis. Internal speakers - less so.
iPad Pro comes in two sizes - traditional and large. Large is the same size as a MacBook Pro 13”.

I recently replaced my iPad 2 as it had been nobbled for some time by an iOS upgrade too far. I'm delighted with the base model iPad for which I paid just under £320 at Costco.
A non-techie friend bought the smaller iPad Pro from John Lewis. She was either persuaded to add the keyboard or it came as standard. She NEVER (doesn't know where it is any more) uses the keyboard, doesn't understand split screen and the later enhancements to the iOS and should, probably, have gone for the base model.
I have seen the big iPad and it's rather wonderful - use it as a second screen with a laptop and much more BUT its bigness is also a disadvantage when you need to carry it around.
If I had unlimited money (I so don't) and wanted a keyboard and pen - I'd look seriously at the Microsoft Surface Pro. I prefer the Windows environment for actually working and have invested time in learning my favourite programs.

This is definitely something to consider. In a choice between picking up an iPad or an iPad Mini that we have in the household, I invariably go for the iPad Mini, mainly because you lose little or no usability or screen legibility in the shrinkage and yet it is so much easier to handle and use over long periods, particularly if you use it while holding it in your hands. As for the Pro, lovely though it might be, it's a non-starter for me due to the size.

I was tempted, very tempted but I occasionally need to read film scripts and PDF manuals. I like to have the whole of a page (A4 and American Legal) available on one screen while remaining legible.
I use the 9.7" Pro with the Apple pencil and wouldn't be without one now. I've been paperless for work since and I can always find what I've scribbled (search my scribble using OneNote). I'm not a fast typist and find taking notes or marking up documents so much easier just writing on the screen.
As I'm listening to music and an idea for the next album comes to mind, I can just pick it up and scribble. Admittedly by the time I've picked it up I've sometimes forgotten why! ;-)
Thank you chaps.
For many applications size reaches a point of diminishing returns. For simple reading, I don't need to go past my regular iPhone (previous phones weren't good enough). I can watch movies on it in a pinch, but tend towards my iPad (mid-size). Same with internet, OK on the phone (well, not really) and just fine on an iPad. For anything more involved, I grab my 15" MBP and now we have a new iMac 27" that leaves them all in the dust for photo editing. At work, I'm loving my new super- widescreen Dell monitor for the ability have parallel documents open for side-by-side and for the amount of spreadsheet I can get across the page.
The reason I'd choose the big iPad pro is if I was doing graphic work with a pen. (I'm not)
I think I’m minded towards a Pro because of the extra resolution when viewing photos. But I get the point about size so would go for the 10” model.
Thanks again guys.

The effective resolution is "infinite" on all models. You can't see individual pixels on the 9.7", it's just that the images will obviously be smaller.
Argh - thanks again.

No problems. I had a look at the website (I haven't bought an iPad in ages) and to me, the 10.5" iPad Pro looks like the sweet spot. If I was buying another one, that's exactly what I'd get.
We all have different requirements. I opted for the mini 4. Complete with mobile for the gps chip.
At approx A5 size it’s perfectly readable and I can carry it on long hikes as a moving map. Same in the aircraft - it fits on my knee-pad. The gps system is reliable and reasonably accurate.
If I wanted to do a lot of reading in a stationary environment I would have opted for I-pad pro with a 9.7” screen.
For word processing, spread sheets and graphics, it would have been a Windows based PC with keyboard.
As I said, we all have different requirements. And compromises.
I concur - 10.5 “ is the one to go for + smart keyboard. Makes for a neat cover and helps typing.
I am on my second iPad. My next will be the Pro.
Lindsay, I purchased my first Apple product back in September an iPad 9.7 2017 model the main reason was that the Android app was problematic when using my Naim Core.
I was very disappointed with the screen it seemed to be very reflective not as good as my Samsung Tab S fortunately with Apple you have a a 14 day policy in which you can return the product for a full refund or exchange it for a different model.
The Staff at the Apple store in Bath were very helpful and I ended up with the 10.5 Pro Model which I have found to be a vastly superior device the screen is in a different league as it should be for the extra cost plus the IOS App runs the Core like a dream.
I trust this helps I should also add that I am so impressed with the Apple system I have since purchased a new iMac to replace my Window 10 device new I Phone next ?
My wife has a standard ipad and a mini one. I always see her using the mini.
I don't have an ipad, if my iphone is not enough I use the Macbook air, as some apps only run in mobiles I have been tempted to buy a mini, I find it easier to handle and hold for long due to smaller size and weight.

Thanks Pcd. I wasn't aware that the Pro screen was such an upgrade. I've had iPads in various versions since they first came out. I find the retina display screen on my 9.7" (it's a few years old) to be great. I'm excited that the Pro will be even better, although I have no plans to upgrade just yet.
Okay chaps have got the Pro 10. Initial reaction excellent.
Now recommend me a good case.
Thanks again.

I have a Moko Ultra Slim. It was recommended by Wirecutter. It is very simple, but works fine for me. If you are in need of more protection or pockets etc then you need to look elsewhere.
