HDX problem

Posted by: J.B on 13 December 2017

Just recently my HDX has started to play up.  Displayed on the screen is the naim logo surrounded by the cd disc shape and the message "please wait". After about 15 seconds the last used screen will appear briefly (either last played or home screen) then back to the "please wait" screen,  during this time it is shown as offline on the ipad. The only way to use my HDX is to switch off and restart. It will work for a varied amount of time before going into please wait mode. The HDX is 5 years old and has been faultless until now.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks Jon

Jon, it’s probably worth giving Naim support a call.

Have done Richard. Turning it off then on back again with the internet cable disconnected should sort it I'm told, something to do with it having 2 IP addresses. Will keep the forum posted as to outcome.

Thanks for your response.

Hopefully that will do it. Next up will be boot sector and CMOS battery. Hopefully you won't be going there.

CMOS battery is a fairly simple DIY fix if you have the hexagon keys to remove the feet and outer case !  (see my post on this about a month ago "NS01 doesn't start...)

Boot sector, on the other hand, sounds fairly crucial... that would be a definate RTB (return to base) I would think.  I never found a decent boot sector repair tool for fixing PCs let alone HDXs

It ain't fixed.

It worked as should for around 2 days then last night n-serve lost connection. It still worked using the HDX touch screen and it was still connected to the router because the radio was working. Checked this morning and now the please wait screen has reappeared.

Sounds like its something a quick on off will not fix. Any guidance would be very much appreciated.

I had a similar problem with my HDX, and the issue seems to have been problems with the boot sector.

My local dealer was able to hook the HDX up to an external monitor, and confirmed this to be the case, probably as the result of an incorrect shutdown, (my fault).

He then reinstalled the software, routinely changed the CMOS battery, and the rest, as they say, is history.

A visit to your nearest Naim dealer will hopefully avoid the need for a return to Salisbury.

Time to contact the dealer.

I did manage to come up with a cure when my HDX did this which was not only cost effective but improved sound quality by an unexpected margin. This was because I was using the HDX as a server to feed an NDS. If you are using the HDX as a primary source for playback, my fix won't work.

IIRC, getting the boot sector fixed and a new CMOS battery, plus a bleeding logo cost me around £140. Not bad to get a six year player back up to tip top condition.
