Hi all,
My Classé CAP-2100 amp has RCA and truly XLR balanced inputs.
Shoul I use a RCA to RCA cable (I have a 0.5 meters Nordost Red Dawn), buy a chord DIN to RCA Chorus 1 meter (available here in Portugal) or order a DIN to XLR?
To my ears, the DAC V1 using my Sennheiser HD 600 is better than the Chord Hugo and 2Qute most people prefer in this forum, don’t know why and I use to go in a regular basis to classic concerts, being a piano player (a modest one, but one that can say when a Steinway & Sons sounds like that or when Maria Joao Pires is inspiared- believe me).
Same thing using the DAC V1 with the Classé and my ProAc Response D28.
Anyway, there is this thing about DINs, some sellers says it’s more a Naim purists thing than a really big thing, because Naim knows how to (lately) implement RCA (or they didn’t, in their pragmatic approach - and they told me about how long they wait to implement digital outs, to built their first DAC, their first DAC with an asynchronous USB, and so on, and so on).
But it is also true that the most of them, don’t understand my connection to the Naim DAC V1, in a price level below my other gear (including my beloved Linn LP 12).
Maybe I have an earing problem, but I keep believing that the V1 is an underrated DAC, and it face in my listening room PS Audio Perfectware, Myteks and the Chord DACs.
Sorry for any gramathical error.
Many thanks,
Fernando Ribeiro

I have tried the Red Dawn, many years ago. At the time I thought it was very, very good. I believe that you will have so spend a significant amount to get a DIN-RCA/XLR that will sound better than the RD. Unless, of course, you dont like the sound signature of this.

I am inclined to think that the DAC-V1 is quite underrated too, but specifically as a stand-alone DAC, I know nothing of its abilities if used as a pre-amp. I read a lot of reviews before purchasing one, and no one had anything much, if anything at all, bad to say about it. I would say that it was strongly promoted as being for desktop use with headphones, or to partner the NAP 100, almost as though using in a main systems as a stand-alone DAC was some kind of after thought / nice-to-have feature, rather than being something it excelled at. Strange really, as a number of comments I've noticed around here in the last few years, suggest that it actually performs best when used with a superior pre-amp, or even integrated amp, as a fixed output DAC.

I'm agree , but actually have in pair with a nap 200 : very nice !!
....for sure I'm going to change it with a real pre ( 122 or 202 )

you should buy DIN to RCA connection, the chorus one that you mention.
Personally I prefer Vertere, and they will make you such a cable too, but at that price level, the Chord one is just fine.
I used to own DAC V1, and I did like it very much when I had it. I still like it very much.
It was replaced by a Chord Hugo.

well there is only one PSU that you can use, which is the one supplied by Chord.
with Chord you do not need to worry about PSU, the Hugo runs from the internal battery, and they have a long history with PSU, in fact John Franks was involved with making SMPS for apple computers more than 30 years ago.
Don't try to out think Chord on this you will damage the Hugo, and you cannot hope to improve on the decades engineering knowledge of Rob Watts and John Franks.

I like the DAC-V1 too. It is currently sitting in my main system fed via USB from a Sonore ultraRendu/PC setup! Iam using RCA/RCA connections using a 20 ft DIY interconnect made from Linn Analogue wire from years ago!
Wich ampli ?
I use DIY (do it yourself) amps in my main system! The DAC-V1 is used as a DAC only (fixed output) and for headphone use occasionally when editing files!
Happy Holidays!

I also use a V1 with a DIY amp in a second system, as both DAC and preamp in an all-digital system. It's an excellent device, sounds very good and is a pleasure to use. I did try the V1 in my main system as a DAC only, and although my Chord QBD was better, the V1 certainly wasn't disgraced.

it sure wasn't disgraced by the Hugo, and what I remember about the DAC V1, was the beautiful musicality and awesome, simply awesome articulated bass notes that come out of it.
I used it for watching movies, and it was as if I had another, much better subwoofer when DAC V1 was playing.
