Barry Manilow?

Posted on: 29 August 2011 by Gale 401

Scott English put out a 45 in the uk in 71 called Brandy.

It was a good song.

He then, and i will never forgive him for this ?Gave it to big nose and he sold millions by changing it to Mandy.

Ok Scott had to make a living.

But are you not meant to suffer for your art?

No where in any history book i have ever read does it say you have to make others suffer for your art?

Scott went on to pen and produce Jeff Becks HiHo silver.

Thank god Barry didnt cover that.

What the words would of been just begs?

Scott produced the Thin Lizzy,Thin Lizzy album next.

Christ only knows what Barry would of done with that if he had got his hands on it.

Sorry gale 401 but I kinda like Big Bad Barry, he is so kitsch, come on, who doesn't like Bermuda Triangle?

What I don't like is all the reality stars and starlets who are looking to fast track it to the top with no skill or talent, never having to tread the boards in seedy little clubs for a pittance slowly building up a fan base. These are the people I hate along with the gormless fan base of idiots who have been brought up on this sort of sh#te. This sort of stuff adds nothing to musical culture similar to the crap " put the needle on the record " pap from the 90s. I suppose the people I hate the most are Stock Aiken and Waterman and that Simon Cowell for ripping off generation after generation.

Regards.

I warmed to Barry Manilow when I heard him on Dessert Island Discs - seemed like a genuinely nice guy with humility and talent on his side, and lessons learned from experiences with fame and money, both good and not-so-good.

But I wouldn't choose to listen to any of his music. And I agree with Chimp, although I'm not sure it's a wholly new phenomenon.

I think we should have a separate Barry Manilow thread describing the best and the worst that this man has to offer.LOL

BM is another one of the "Vegas" type singers, bland and slightly condescending. Bennett, Sinatra in fact

rat pack type artists in general do nothing for me whatsoever.

No problem with BM.  I'll confess that I actually own one of his LPs.

Now "Chris The Berk" is another matter completely.  Talentless, and responsible for one of the most terrible dirges I've ever heard.  How on earth did it ever get to be so popular at weddings etc?

Yeah, Chris D B is very annoying although I do have a soft spot for a spaceman came travelling, as for everything else he has done would probably be good as a Frisbee or a ninja k disc.

Another nominee to this thread is Axl Rose, probably one of the most annoying performers I have seen, his voice grates and as for his dancing, well.

I think it must be just you really, as I'm sure most of us adore Bazza; perhaps not quite as much as we adore Demis Roussos. Honestly I'd rather listen to either than Frank Sinatra or PC. But in the end I'd rather listen to Captain Beefheart than any of those crooner dudes. I know I'm weird, but I'm sure not hungry.

DR was fine in Aphrodite's Child, of course.

Here is the superb Spanish Train for everybody's pleasure

I've read BM's autobiog; it's a good read.

A classic New Yorker from a tough neighbourhood done-good story.

If BM looked crafted his image a bit less Liberace-esque and more Neil Sedaka-esque, he would not have alienated quite so many people who still cannot separate an image from a musical performance. I happen to think that he is a fine musician (well maybe not *quite* as gifted on the keyboards as Elton John or Eric Carmen, but still far better than adequate), has a knack for a good melody and can excite an audience to frenzy...never mind that most of them are older women.

I went with the family to a musical he'd written - universal view was the songs weren't very good (BM did not appear he only wrote it). It got bad reviews too - so it wasn't just a few of us who didn't like it. It closed early, but possibly made the Producers a fortune.

He has some talent, but what he does with it is rather mawkish...
