Core copy music files question

Do nor add to, delete, or in any way alter the Music folder using a computer. It’s for storing Core CD rips only, and you access and edit them with the Naim app. Use the Downloads folder for everything else, and access that via your computer. 

Got it. What if the files initially came from a Music folder that was previously backed up to an external drive? Format should be unaltered. The Core Music folder appears to be write protected and inaccessible for a copy.

I can’t imagine why the you wouldn’t be able to copy the Music folder - I routinely do this on my Unitiserve to use CD rips on other devices. Write protection, on the other hand, might be a good idea, if it stops you adding files to it which should be going into the Downloads folder. 

You can import files that are in a Music folder in a PC or NAS into a Core using the app and that will (if you keep your fingers crossed) put Naim-ripped files into the music folder rather than the downloads folder.

Thanks, David. How does one share a folder on a Mac such that the Core will recognize it as a share? I adjusted permissions (all users -read & write) and also tried designating the folder as an AFP share in system prefs but no. luck. Thanks.

I'm sorry that I don't not know anything about Macs, but someone else will be able to answer. However I suspect that this isn't a matter of you doing something wrong with your Mac, but rather a mixture of the Core and your network.

Naim say that the latest firmware update for the Core has improved share discovery, so if you aren't on the latest Core firmware, you might try updating it. Also it would be worth trying the usual network things like rebooting your router, your Mac and your Core.

You should not be using your laptop as a share.  Simply copy music files from it to the Downloads folder.  That's it!

Bart the OP was posing the question of how to add files that were previously in a Music folder, ie ripped with a US or similar. To get them into the Core's music folder (e.g. So he can edit metadata with the app) he has to import them and at the moment the issue is that his Core doesn't recognise his Mac as a share from which it can import. Putting them into the downloads folder is not the answer.

For all but 'edit with the Naim app,' simply dragging them into the Downloads folder would work just fine.  If it were me, I would edit the metadata outside of the Naim app and then just put them in the Downloads folder, and be done with it

I have gone to a nas now, but a good bit of the music on my nas was ripped with my UServe.  It works just fine on a nas . . . or on another UServe or Core's Downloads folder.

I will add that one of the nice things about the Naim app is that all of the music on the Core will show up in one library.  So it really doesn't matter if music is in the library of files that the Naim server ripped itself, or in the Downloads folder; all will integrate.  So zero advantage of importing previously ripped music files.  (Being able to edit metadata with the Naim app is actually a disadvantage; free software on a laptop does a much better job.)

Absolutely!  I'm just trying to dissuade the OP from feeling he needs to "import" when "copy to Downloads" would suffice!  I am answering his penultimate question. "Does it matter?"  My answer is a firm "NO!"
