Sopra 2 versus 804 3dsysteem
Posted by: m.paul taylor on 29 December 2017
System is NDS/555DR/252/supercap dr/ 300DR with Allaes.
I am thinking of speaker upgrade. Room is smallish (narrow). Allaes great in corners - speakers have to be close to walls at back and sides. Your views would be welcome - together with any other ideas. I am looking to spend about £7,000 so ex-dem will be my choice if list is too high
I've heard the Sopra 2s a few times and being driven by a 300DR. I very much like them and may get a pair myself one day so I might commend them to you. But you have said that they will need to work close to the rear and side walls. I believe the Sopra 2s need a fair bit of room behind them to work well - my dealer has suggested they would need more room that my current Electra 1028be which are 34cm from the rear wall - so I would be very doubtful that the Sopra's would match your requirements.
I also run Sopra 2s with the 300DR and they sound great to these ears but they are well clear of rear and side walls. If the room is on the small size they might dominate - not only sonically (boomy perhaps) and visually. That said if you can audition them in your room before buying and like what you hear so much the better! I certainly wouldn't buy them without said home demo though.
I have Sopra N2s driven by a 300DR and 282 + SuperCap DR. I like the setup a lot. The room is 6m by 5m max approximately and they are on the long wall a bit more than 2m apart and their rear base 34cm from wall. I haven’t bothered to fiddle because they nicely fill the room with sound. The room is carpeted with lots of curtains and doors so not simple to position round but it seems to work. The TV is in between them and we listen to it via the nDAC.
They stood out for me against Neats which required stands and looked ugly to my mind. SWMBO liked them as features and for the sound! Three of the drivers (2 bass and 1 mid range) have magnetically attached covers which are handy for when the grandchildren come! They are heavy and do not move.

The best option as had been said, is have a home dem, all good dealers will have no problem with this.
I agree that the Sopra -2 need space away from rear and side walls. Boomy base otherwise. But every room is different and of course would audition if you can. Can be spectacular.
I replaced Allaes back in April with 804 D3's. Superb speakers a huge improvement, but they do need some room. Mine are 25cm from rear wall and 93cm from nearest side wall.
I did a long testing between Dali Epicon 6 and the B&W 804.
In comparsion I didnt like the 804 very much, the high notes were realy harsh, bass were lacking and more of a 1 dimensional sound.
Because of the harsh hights it was exhausting to listens for a long time.
But both need room to the back and the sides.

I was quite interested going back to B&W 804D3, but after auditioning them a year ago, I found them as your described.
Oh well - these speakers do work, maybe with different electronics like McIntosh or Classe?
Yes, the 804 work very well with naim amplification. I do not find them as described by Analogmusic and Themrock, each to his own.
Therefore, to avoid confusion and be swayed by the impressions of individuals on this Forum, as always M. Paul Taylor should audition the speakers himself and form his own opinion.
Shure he should audition them for himself.
But i think all three the Sopra,B&W and the Dali are not the right fit for him, because he is looking for speakers which can be close to back and walls and they are not made for this.
He will get a boomy and muddy sound.
Thank you for al, the replies. Time to wait and listen
