SuperNait 2 + SuperCap DR / Ovator S-600

Posted by: Drikus on 02 January 2018

Are the S-600's a good match for this combo? I've got the opportunity to buy a six year old shop demo pair in Zebrano finish for a very nice price but no chance to audition them because they are like 800 km away from my location and I've got no time at the mo to drive over there. I'm willing to take the risk ordering them unheard because of the price but I would also like to hear some user experiences.

I have hardwood floors and also invested in a set of Fraim Chips for mine.

You mean these?

The room they will be in has a vinyl floor so I'm going to buy these too.

Yes, I have the same. They pop up now and then second hand. I'm sure there are good other chips too, but I had a set of regular hifi shop chips before and I was disappointed by them. Better use coins in that case.

If you are going to collect them box size: 1360 x 535 x 560 each. I have a Citroen Grand C4 Picasso, it just fitted. The boxes are large.

No, the're going to be shipped to my location free of charge.

Hmm I hope you have done some safe payment &  trust in seller or if its a well known dealer ?

Many scammers offer free shipping to your doorstep with a price too good to be true, just use Western U..

It's a well known dealer and I had to drive a hard bargain to get him where I wanted.

The only place to find the Ovator plugs and to order NAC A5 cables terminated with them seems to be Tom Tom Audio but they aren't permitted by Naim to deliver new items outside the UK (Belgium) according to James...

Cymbiosis is having a fair amount of these tweakeries too. Otherwise check the s/h markets. It pops up now and then. End of last year, I purchased the 8 chips s/h. No issue.

Or contact Latham Audio, they do the import for BeNeLux.

Not listed in the Cymbiosis estore. Have looked around for second hand ones but nothing so far.

I have but haven't received a reply yet.

Just sold two pairs of Valhalla interconnects I had left over from my previous Lindemann setup so I'm starting to look at the Super Lumina speaker cable instead.

(Just to be clear, they weren't advertised here or sold to anyone on the forum)

Will do. Thank you for the tip.

Once you have your Ovators, ensure you take your time to position them well. I did not expect that modern speakers are so fuzzy about positioning. Especially bass depth / integration is a thing. Moved my Ovators back 5 cm last night (now 30 from rear wall and almost no toe-in) and suddenly the real low bass is there. Was listening to Camille Saint Saens organ symphony yesterday and I did not know that Ovators could go that deep either on high and low volumes.

Still some fine tuning to go then.

Yes it seems that they need plenty of room to breathe. Mine wil be standing 75 cm from the rear wall and 35 cm from the side wall with no toe-in to begin with. I'll let them play for a while in that position and do the nessesary adjustments later if needed.

I did so in the meantime. Wayne answered and he will order them for me.

Best to get Ovator plugs. It’s not only about the fit but also compatibility of contact materials.

Also - watch out for polarity!!

Just bought a pair of pre-loved Super Lumina loudspeaker cables. Maybe a bit overkill for a SN2 but Im looking towards future upgrades.

Good choice! Worked well when I used them with my SN2.

Don't worry, you're in good company here in the madhouse!! My 5m pair of SL cables cost almost as much as the combined cost of the amp and speakers they connect. On the face of it, that is totally insane. I justified the purchase based on the fact that the cables still gave a big uplift in sound quality - comparable to a black box upgrade - but I don't have room for more black boxes. Also, my jaw nearly hit the floor when I found out how much (little) I would actually have to pay for them

Look around for demo or pre-loved cables like I do instead of paying full retail price. Same with the black boxes. I was able to find my SN2, DAC, SC DR, XPS DR, Ovators, Hi-Line DIN, black SNAICs and the Super Luminas in a time span of two months and saved a lot of money this way. Now I want the Super Lumina DINs as well ofcourse. Only 1 on the market right now, a shop demo pair at 18.5% off recommended retail price but sadly, they do not ship outside the UK either.

*Too late to edit: It's a single Super Lumina DIN of course, not a pair. Still thinking in RCA/XLR terms.

I'm driving S600s with a SN1 and HiCap. It works fine. There's more to come with box upgrades, I'm sure. I have Linn Skeets under mine. They work fine, too. Positioning of the speakers is key for best results.

Installed them today. Haven't done any serious listening yet because they are still standing on wheels. Fraim chips should arrive Monday.

How much are them apart and from side walls ?

When properly installed they are going to be 2.9 m apart and both 37 cm away from the side walls.

Did you try a little closer ? Mine are 65cm from side walls and 2m apart. However i' d like more space in the middle

No, they are still on the trolleys at the moment because I haven't received the Fraim chip floor protectors yet. I don't hear any bass related issues so they will be staying in that position for now. Imaging, detail and soundstage is already very impressive, can't wait to hear them on spikes. Super Lumina speaker cables and DIN interconnect will also be arriving this week. A lot to look forward to!
