CD5XS Drawer / Puck issue

Posted by: Aric on 02 January 2018

Just moved for the second time (in 2017) and yesterday I played my first cd on the newly installed system. First observation: the CD player’s puck gently scraped the top of drawer opening when opening and closing the drawer. Played ok and didn't observe any other issues. I had the puck inside the drawer for transport and storage for two months. Not sure if that would cause the issue? Appears the laser mech in the transport platter itself is now sitting a bit high, which is causing the puck to hit when opening. The clearance around the drawer is fine in every direction, so that’s not what is causing the issue.

Anyone have any similar experiences? I've had the 5XS for a few years and purchased used, plus I've moved 1000+ miles a couple of times. So no direct dealer service available.

Thanks

The drawyers can drop a bit. Going up is uncommon. They are adjustable. But if you're near a dealer, that will be your best bet.

Maybe give it a couple of days to settle first?

I assume the transport bolt(s) were used in the move?

Sorry to read this Aric. I have no experience of the problem you describe with my CD5XS. I'd switch the player off and unplug it. Then I'd screw in the transport bolt back in again fairly firmly by hand, then undo it. And reconnect and power up and see if that makes any difference. Hope the rest of the move is hassle free.

Yes, transit bolt was installed the entire time.

I’ll install it and see if after removing it if that doesn’t help. If not i’ll take a pic and see if that helps clarify the issue as it’s not the drawer itself that’s causing the problem.

My guess is the transit bolt was never actually threaded into the transport drawer's female receiver/counterpart. Correct seating can require some in/out feathering of the drawer to align the transport's threads to the transit bolt, especially if the transport is sagging a bit with age/use. If the mark is missed, the transit bolt will progressively tighten against the transport itself giving the illusion the drawer is properly secured, when actually the tray bottom is being pinned upward by the bolt. Based on your description of the puck now scraping the top, I'd say that's what has happened. If that's the case, the best solution is to have the drawer re-aligned, fingers crossed the transit bolt wasn't tightened to a degree that caused damage.

That sounds logical.

Very well could be, or something similar.

As an update, I've spent the last week plus confirming the issue only exists when i leave a CD/puck in the tray for prolonged periods (i.e. 24 hrs). Moreover, the sound of friction / grinding is irrespective of the puck being in the platter (i.e. it's not really the puck hitting the drawer opening, it's actually just moving the drawer in / out). If I do leave a disc/puck in, it takes several actions of opening / shutting the door without a disc, sort of clearing some code operating instructions I guess, then playing a disc (when I shut the door with the disc there is still friction, but after playing I am able to freely and cleaning open the drawer without issue). I have had absolutely zero issue - from day to day - assuming I don't leave a disc/puck in the drawer overnight.

All very odd, but as I stated previously, no impacts at all on sound quality. I'll probably just continue with this odd functionality until it gets worse. It will be interesting in and of itself to see how the situation degrades (assuming it does so).

In times like these, it's nice to know I have my TT as full-on replacement for a while if needed

Hmm.. hard to know from your description but it may be the drawer ribbon rubbing along the chassis. There’s a special fold in the ribbon and in some cases a tiny bit of movement with place of where it kind of catches a edge and scrapes.
