Olive HiCap with NAC 282

Posted by: Adam Zielinski on 05 January 2018

Hi guys

A technical question: can NAC 282 be powered off an Olive HiCap?

Cheers,
Adam

PS
The reason behind the question is: I need to loan my current HiCap DR to a friend to test. I have a re-capped Olive HiCap which I could to use to power my current set in the meantime (282 / HiCapDr / NAP 250DR). It's a stop-gap solution, just to have some music playing over the weekend.

Risky, Adam. I mean, what if you found that you preferred the old, bog-standard Hi-Cap over the 'fancy schmancy' DR one?

Easy - my friend will buy it off me

There is another scary thing which I don’t want to do - take my SuperCapDr off my other set and put it on the 282.
Because that would mean that I may have to sell 252 and buy that 552 I’ve always dreamt off...

Noooooo.... mustn’t think bad thoughts...

Just as I had managed to put such thoughts out of my mind.........

BTW Adam, I loved what my 282 did when I swapped a non DR Hicap2 for a SuperCapDR. So don't try it unless you have a body part you can sell to fund the resultant 552!

That’s fine Nigel - you don’t need new speakers - my MA300s sound amazing, now that I’ve put them on those SSC supports I’ve emailed you about. In fact the whole system just gelled so fine, I’m afraid to touch it (NDX + 555PS, 282 + HiCapDr + NAP250DR) not to spoil anything.
So the money I’ve just saved you can go towards that new pre-amp

Hi Adam,

Yes, I never tried a HiCapDR on my 282 when I had it, moving from a non DR HiCap straight to a SuperCapDR. I suspect that the HiCapDR is the best VFM power supply for a 282 and its natural partner. And, as always if it sounds great then leave well alone.

The MS GX300s never cease to amaze me and have responded beautifully from the addition of the 555PS now powering my NDS. Must give the SSC supports a try.

The next logical upgrade are speakers or possibly 300DR. But the 250DR and GX300s are working so well, I am seriously considering a 552 next but it would need to be pre loved in order to preserve my marriage which is of great importance to me. Trading in my 252/SuperCapDR will of course help.

As you know, I have always had Monkfish tendencies.

I had both classic and Olive HiCaps on my 282 before settling on a CB serviced model all worked well I now use the cuddly toy dual Hicap but only until an Olive SC arrives at the right price. I think it is only the xps olive that doesn't work on classic series all other PSU's mix and match....I believe.

Bob the olive XPS works on the nDac and CDS3

I’m pretty sure the olive XPS should not be used on an nDac. Something to do with a voltage issue.

You shouldn't use an XPS with a serial number below 188015 on any Naim streamer.  It's fine on the CD players and DAC.

Adam, do you mean you haven't tried the Supercap DR on the NAC 282 all this while? Even though you do not intend to use the Supercap DR on the 282, I think you should try it just for the sake of trying. You wouldn't know what the 282 is missing if you did not try.

FWIW I agree that the NAC 282, Hicap DR and NAP 250 DR is a well balanced system and for this reason there is little inclination to mess with it. However, my recent experience reveals that 2 power supplies on the NAC 282 are better than one. I am sure the Supercap DR will bring some changes to the sound but anyway that's irrelevant if it will not be used with the 282 on a long-term basis.
