An awful mistake?
Posted by: nimrodmr2p on 05 January 2018
Following my previous posts regarding streaming I have just received a phone call to say my ATOM has arrived from Naim, however I am now thinking I have made a serious error of judgement. All I wish to do is to rip, store and play my CD collection through my existing amp (Nait XS) and perhaps listen to internet radio. Now I know about the issues and costs of subscription streaming services I can do without these. It has been suggested I can get what I need with the same quality as a CD replayed on my CD5 XS by using the following:
Innuous ZEN mini
Sonos connect device
Will I also need a DAC or is this included in the above
Any comments welcome
I could suggest, but I believe that dealers need to get ahead of the game and work with Naim and supply the whole deal, if needed. I am not he only Numpty out there.
Just in case I use a Seagate back up plus-from Amazon
In my experience the dealers do not regard storage decisions as part of their remit
Totally agree....but things have/are changing......the people with the money are perhaps retiring or retired and do not want the hassle. That’s me.....I am not the only one.

It is if they think they're selling you a device that has some! Seems like Naim need to give them a bit of staff training. With the Star, you can use it to rip to CDs, and save them to a USB drive connected to it.
If I have a STAR and store rips to a plug in USB drive how do I back it up. I can borrow my wife's ipad to control the STAR but my main computer is a windows based one?
I own a Star, with which I rip CDs onto both a USB attached hard drive and an SD memory card (I won’t bore you as to why I have both). To backup, I simply connect the drive to my Mac and copy the content over manually. I see no reason why you can’t do the same with a Windows PC?
Thanks GregWPGibbs
Does that mean I can connect two USB hard drives at the same time?
Also if I rip onto a memory stick then I could play that through our car?

There are 2 USB inputs (front and back) so you will be able to connect 2 drives. I haven't used a Star, so I don't know if you can save rips to both drives to create a backup. Otherwise, just connect 2 USB drives to a computer and copy from one to the other.
I use CD rips from a Unitiserve copied onto a USB stick for my car - I can't see why this wouldn't work with the Star too. You would probably need to rip to FLAC, not WAV, otherwise non-Naim devices may have trouble reading metadata.
An interesting update
A rang a few Naim dealers today to get more help in selecting storage for a STAR
One is insisting the STAR has its own integral storage which I know to be incorrect, mind you the Naim website creates this impression
None seem to want help with backing up on saved files
Another says to avoid the CORE
Another suggests partnering a STAR with a CORE, why would you need to ripping engines?
Yet another thinks the ATOM is more powerful than the STAR
I think nothing has changed in Hi-fi over the last 40 years, i.e. too many people talking about something they don't understand themselves. It is refreshing to find someone with good knowledge but they are few and far between. If I were naim i would be a little concerned

Perhaps to complete the lookand to think that I went to my dealer got a Core chucked it in with my NDS and all has been fine for the past 6 months. Perhaps I should stop there in case my smugness makes the whole shooting match implode. Even the dreaded update worked fine first time. It even, shock horror, backs up to my two NAS drives and seems to talk to them quite nicely.
Mind you Trevor did set me up remotely - perhaps that’s the secret?!
Well I've done it, changed my ATOM order for a STAR which I collected this morning
Early days yet and have not managed to get onto internet radio but have managed to play CDs!!
First impression
The sound is lighter but possibly more detailed than my CD5 XS with Nait XS, the lovely impact and clout of the old combination is lacking
Congratulations on the STAR, look forward to hearing your comments in the weeks to come as the box settles in and you have some hours of listening experience under your belt.

Let's hope you haven't made an awful mistake!

Only one more step on the ladder, and he arrives at the Nova -- that might return the impact and clout...
The dealer mentioned that STAR can suffer from a problem with the plastic bar with the Naim logo coming off. It would seem it is held on with double sided tape which Naim have yet to refine. A £3000 plus piece of kit held together with sticky tape!!
I should have kept my mouth shut
Would you believe it the Naim logo bar has just fallen off after only a few hours use
Incredible
Ah I've had the same think this week- see my other thread. Seriously not impressed by that! Awaiting word from my dealer as to next steps. Mart said it was the first time they'd heard of it . Does it need to be removable? I haven't had a proper look at it.
Who needs soap operas?
Wonderful imaginative screenplay, keep it coming............
.sjb
They said the Uniti case was easier and cheaper to assemble and fill than the classic one.
Perhaps they should supply a tube of audiophile seperglue with each one - not any old glue mind you!
There'll be a heated debate as to whether the sound improves if the glue is applied front to back or left to right...????
Wait a little for the SL sticky tape upgrade to appear.
HOLD ON A MINUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Naim Logo is held on with sticky tape? OMG this is absolutely hilarious, who needs T.V? How unimpressed on a scale of 1-10 were you NIMRODMR2P?
