Connecting a 282 to Hi-Cap and Flatcap2

Posted by: AudioClueless on 06 January 2018

Hi everyone, newbie to the forum but I've had a modest Naim system for years. Just updated the pre-amp to a 282, which I have powered from a single Hi-Cap. I also have a Flatcap2, which is currently only used to power a Headline. Now theoretically, I think I could use the Flatcap to power the second supply on the 282 (upgrade 2) whilst leaving the Hi-Cap powering upgrade 1. But I'm worried that this will cause some sort of hideous earth loop and start blowing things up.

So, any thoughts on whether this is a good idea and more importantly a safe thing to do? I guess I can make my own mind up on whether it makes things sound better if I try it, but I'd welcome any thoughts and guidance on whether this is generally a good idea.

Thanks

Generally not a good idea to mix and match power supplies on the 282 as when using both upgrade options..one side powers one channel and the other side powers the other channel

So you need as near matched supplies as possible

You could again in theory use each output of the flatcap ( if an XS etc) and no feed back problems as they are isolated from each other...but again..not recommended

I ran my 282 from half a flatcap 2x when I first got it. It was OK to get going, fast but lacking in body. I also tried using both outputs for the 282, the diffuse soundstage gained in precission but shrank, in neither case was there much depth discernable, I prefered the single output. When I got a Hicap the sound gained a relative ease and filled out, I was never tempted to combine the two and I think my CD5x gained from having the Flatcap to itself.

Don't power the NAC282 using both supplies from a Flatcap2 - apart from anything else, Output A is 24V and Output B is 22V...

As I understand it, the two power inputs for the 282 do not power the two channels separately, and perfectly matched supplies are not therefore required. That said, I’d leave it with just the Hicap, as the Flatcap supplies are really not good enough for a 282. Another way is to get a Supercap and move the Hicap to the Stageline.

Mine was a 2x, as Richard says you can’t do it with a 2.

I tried a Flatcap2 with my 202. it sounded better without it.  A NAPSC was the best value for money power supply i have ever heard from Naim

It's not quite as simple as one 'cap does left and the right - mainly because you have supplies for the listen and rec circuits and some are shared - also only one supply carries the signal (which is why a single box supply such as a Supercap avoids a potential system earth issue from two separate Hicaps).  I'd have to dig out my old Naim notes for the details - and just to be awkward, it's different on the NAC82! However, for best performance, you should definitely ensure the supplies are not grossly mismatched

Thanks everyone- I think I’ve generally concluded that although it’s possible (so long as I use the right Flatcap 2 socket) it’s unlikely to be beneficial.

i may give it a try when I’ve got time, but it sounds as though it won’t be worth it...

It was not a post that involved "unauthorised modification" but a different manufacturers product. No wonder people are leaving the forum in favour of facebook

Please read the forum rules. Unauthorised modifications include no-Naim power supplies, non-Naim “Snaics”, Burndies  etc..

As for the membership on this forum, numbers and activity have never been greater, but I’m not entirely sure why you feel that’s relevant here.
