Firmware updates

I wonder if anyone could tell me if during a firmware update, if there is an internet drop out during the process would it brick the player or is it a power failure that would do this (or both) ? This also applies to a TV, or is it best to play safe and download to a USB stick. I occasionally get a drop out, not a lot but knowing my luck it just might do it during an update.

I would not have thought so. The file is downloaded before it is applied. If the line drops during download, it just won't download. What might brick it is if the unit suffers a power loss when the update file is rewriting the FW.

Harry is correct - before I installed a proper switch I would sometimes experience loss of connection to the SU during update. I just reconnected and it carried on without a problem. This applies to products prior to Atom/Star/Nova - I'm not sure if the update process is now more direct. I did a firmware update on my Nova without a problem but probably worth checking with Naim if your internet connection is very unreliable.

A few years ago my first muso got bricked during an update, as i remember it froze half way for what seemed a long time. I unplugged the muso then powered back on, but it didn't. I have a new tv and 4k blu ray player and i don't want this to happen to them the same way. I would have thought in this day and age there would be more protection against your equipment against this kind of thing. Thanks for replys.

I can remember occasions when I thought our MuSos had bricked but they came back, sometimes considerably later. It's not all that common to be the victim of something like this, but never say never. I expect you were unusually unlucky. Not that it helps!
