What do you put between stand mounted speakers and their stands?

Posted by: ROOG on 08 January 2018

I am finally in a position where by I can use my system, (SuperUniti and PMC 21’s on the manufactures stands), for its intended purpose, rather than simply for quiet back ground listening. So having levelled up the stands with their spikes through the carpet into the hard, concrete screed? below I wondered what I should put between the speaker and the stand.

What do others use between the speaker and the stand? I would also be interested to hear of your experiences with other ideas before arriving at your final choice?

I would appreciate your thoughts,

2  X 600 pounds aerate concrete under the stands....quite effective for my atc scm7 but my wife doesn’t want anymore to come in the living room, i don’t know why....

Good heavens, using pounds?

Ç'est 272kg n'est pas?

oui c’est ça!    little joke, je plaisantais bien sûr...  300 kg i think?

Are the 24k very heavy but quite malleable gold stands on top of the concrete bases? How tall is each?

2m each, so speaker base at 4m. Hmm, what are the dimensions of your listening room?

Are you saying you were having us on?  It was so believable that you would have a pair of diminutive SCM7s atop 2m high solid gold stands costing probably a cool million each, atop 2m high concrete pillars, the speakers and gold stands, and stands and concrete, each separated by 5 stillpoints... I assumed your room must be 6m high, the baby chair 3.5m (with ladder), but room actually a stairwell, only 3m x4m wide and long or you’d have bigger ATCs.

my impression of your home is altered forever!

i was not sure you have took me seriously but i was more thinking you saw it was a joke....Sometimes there are some silly systems as 3 meters loudspeakers in small rooms or very cheap speakers with high end amps....    When you asked me what are the dimensions of my room i had an hesitation.   So it’s you that was having me on....

I also use blue tak between my Dynaudio stands and special 40s,always been happy with the result.I originally got some from my dealer too,but recently picked up some more at Canadian tire. The reason I got more is,I actually have just added some on top of my special 40s,To go between the speakers and some spare granite slabs I had sitting around.Another Dynaudio owner I know uses granite on top of his speakers to add weight to them, thought I would give it a try.Still trying to decide if I hear anything improved, but I think the bass seems to be fuller.I have also just ordered two sets of Isoacoustis GAIA 111s to go under my Dynaudio XD 600s,they go in place of the spikes, after reading great reviews about them.

iso acoustics gaia seem to be a very fine product, and not so expensive as stillpoints.....

Yes they are much cheaper than stillpoints,so if they do not work as advertised, not such a big deal. There is another Dynaudio owner using them on his Contour C30s,and he said they definitely improved things.I have read nothing but good things about them,I live in Canada, and they are a reputable Canadian company,so I took a chance on them.Hopefully I might get them this week sometime. My dealer has not given me the final price after tax,but I assume it will be around 500 dollars,or less.

For me the blu-tack has always been the best solution. My Stirling MS-88 have some rubber feet and this time I did not have to use blu-tack

A friend uses oak cones from Russ Andrews. He is the only one I have in my circle that has stands as everyone else has floor standers though my b in l uses large rubber domes instead of spikes. This really did improve things for him but the same idea did me no favours. I am though thinking of buying eight oak cones to try but as yet have not been that convinced it would improve anything for me. Anyone tried this?

If you’ve a friend with oak cones, unless they’re glued on, can you not borrow to try?

I'm not convinced the oak cones work in all situations,  although I recommended them to a friend who had a quality wood floor installed & he was delighted that they did not mark the floor.

Top Tip for you if you do decide to go for them,  don't get 8 (4 on each) as you will never stop the speakers wobbling as they are not adjustable.  You need to go for 3 on each (the milkmaids stool never wobbles)

I have played with various cones, oak, mahogany, ebony, purpleheart and most recently bamboo.

The various woods because I made them myself and was using up offcuts in the shed.

Do they make a difference? Some positive, some not so.

Search Audio Beat Ikea for an interesting article that led me to try bamboo. I used to have Ikea Besta cabinets and needed extra shelves, bought some Atacama racks second hand and hated the glass. Butchers blocks from Ikea ard a good stand in while I vsazved for Quadraspire.

I also experimented sticking beech buttons to the frame with Pritt, but have abandoned that as it was possible for the shelves to slide too easily.

I wouldn't worry too much which wood, if you look carefully at the Russ Andrews site, I am sure his cones are now beech.

Doesn't Russ Andrews sell and use Torlyte material for 'his' cones, shelves and stands etc.? These are some sort of amalgam of chosen materials in these instances mainly involving wood mixes.

I use Tortolyte plinths on my stands and place the speaker directly on the plinths for max performance....
