Naim Hi line vs Chord Sarum T

Posted by: laurence on 09 January 2018

I have a 5pin din Hi line from my Nds to preamp and would have the chance to get a demo Sarum T for a very good price.

The only thing is, it is a RCA to RCA cable.

How much would be the drop soundwise, because I know, Din plugs are always better on Naim products ?

Will the Sarum T (with RCA) be still so much better, although the connection is not via Din plugs from Nds to 252 ?

anyway - I guess I'm being only a bit (!) annoying. Some people here spent many thousands on Chord cables and it must be annoying to hear my views. But then they would have made the comparisons and spent the money wisely.

and still there is the debate - like 282 vs 252 -- it shall continue....

Whilst others just buy what they like, enjoy the music and don't worry about such things.

You should pop over into the Music Room Analog and contribute there - no cable talk allowed though

Yeah James - Just put some material on and enjoy - all this hyper critical listening..leading edge of notes.....the new word here The Naim intended Sound......WTF !

Just borrow some cables and they sound good buy them.

Just Chord signiture RCA and DNM here....but who cares

I'm not sure James, I've seen people on the What are you ... thread  listening to Emmylou's What I Intended to Be recently. I think there is a coded message there.

In my experience the Chord Music 4-5 pin DIN interconnect sounds mighty fine compared to the Naim 4-5 pin DIN Hi-Line between my Naim 552 and Supercap/Superline.

Naim do not do a SL version so I could not compare with such.

Just to add to Richards post above, bear in mind that I found the standard lavender grey Naim I/c to be preferable to the Hi-Line between phono stage/PSU and preamp. Of course that was with a Prefix, so maybe now I have a Superline I should try again...

Richard, I have a Hi-line between my Superline and my ATC SCA2 preamp, and it shows its competence and capability extremely well in this application, much better than the previous Naim DIN to RCA i/c.

Amusing/annoying depending on my mood, but nothing to do with whatever I've spent on Chord cables .

If I'm not mistaken, the Hi-Line, was introduced over an decade ago. The reason for it's introduction, was to improve on mechanical isolation. One thing for sure, Naim doesn't introduce a new product, without doing its homework.

Hence, ten years later, the SL technologies.

Naim joins in with the posh expensive Cables!

Can't speak from experience, but I would imagine, a company thar focuses primarily on cables, might do a better job than a company that is noted for its Amps!

TT ~ Linn

Amps ~ Naim

Speakers~ Wilson

Cables~ Nordest, etc.... Chord...

Just saying!

Pioneers of the World of Audio!

Allante93!

PS. Cables has vastly improved over the last decade!

Maybe CHORDS entry, or middle of the road cables, might out perform Naim's Hi-Line!

Remember when it was suggested not to tighten Naim's Din!

Mechanical Isolation, shortly Naim's Hi-Line was introduced!

Thank you, for all your help.

I am still not shure, if the Chord Sarum T is better or only different to the Hi line, esp. the bass,

which (to me) seem deeper and with more punch on my system, while details and the highs are much more refined

in my system. This was comparing Hi line 5pin din to RCA Chord Sarum T on my NDS.

So are you going to buy Sarum T?

keen to know where you go with this decision.

Hi Laurence. Leave the Sarum on for a week or so, then switch back to the hiline and then decide which our enjoy more. It may surprise you. People never seem to go back and compare.

Hello Richy .

Do you think it will surprise me, how good the Sarum T is or how good the Hi line was ?

Posted on: 14 January 2018 by RICHYH

Either one or the other. But some differences don't leap out in an a/b test. Also some things become tiring.

The Sarum T DIN to DIN interconnect is a massive upgrade from Hi-Line.

What you maybe experiencing is the degraded sonic quality of using RCA type connecters on Naim components.

I think you might reach the conclusion that the Hi-line is actually pretty good !
