Question re using Naim's app for ND5 XS
Posted by: NickViola on 09 January 2018
An example of what my question is about:
Suppose I'm listening to the Goldberg Variations. If I want to start listening from, say, Variation 16 onwards, how do I do it? If I tap on Variation 16, it only plays that track, then stops. I think a roundabout way would be to create a playlist and add tracks starting from the end, but is there a simpler way?
(An aside: I've tried an app like mconnectHD—if I tap on Variation 16, the tracks that follow keep playing to the end of the work. Trouble is mconnectHD has other anomalies—for example, if you're listening to a symphonic movement that's 18 minutes long, you can't jump a few minutes forward or backward.)
I really like the Naim interface, but I find this issue annoying. Maybe I'm missing something...or, maybe life's not perfect and we can't always have our way?
This is not the intended behaviour of the Naim app, although it does seem to be an issue for some people. If you tap on the ... icon next to a track, do you see the option 'play from this track' (not just 'play this track'). This should play to the end of the album.
Thanks for your reply, Chrissu.
Sorry, I should have been more explicit...I have the aforementioned issue when playing from my NAS. If I play music using Tidal as a source, I do get the options 'play from this track' and also 'play this track', although I never use them because anywhere I start on a Tidal album, the subsequent tracks play automatically anyways. I am trying to figure out if I get a NAS album's tracks to respond similarly.
(When I view a NAS track, there is a menu with three dots beside it (this is in the view with smallest folders). When I tap on the three dots I get the following options: Play, Queue next, Queue last, UPnP-Add to...(this one is shaded and doesn't seem to do anything when I select it), New UPnP playlist. Following 'New UPnP playlist' are a list of tracks I've selected over time that are on my 'UPNP PLAYLISTS' on the home page.)
To tell you the truth, I've also never quite figured out how the Queue thing works. Sigh...
If you have enabled ‘tap for options’ in the ‘other settings’ in the App, it will/should work.
Yes as HH says, this works fine for me also. If it doesn't for you then restarting the NDS may clear the problem.

The first option on that list should be 'Play from this track' as you can see from the image HH posted above. Yours seems to be missing. What version of the app are you using, is it up to date?
(The grey 'UPnP - Add to' is just a heading, under which there is a list of your playlists, it's not supposed to do anything.)
Checked and did a few things: Re-installed the app (v5.9). Made sure that 'In other settings' that 'Tap for options' was checked on. Turned the ND5 XS off and restarted it. Still no 'Play from this track'.
However, this is interesting: I have two HDs, an ASUS NAS and an extra backup drive, a WD Mycloud. When I choose UPnP from the home menu, both show up. I have always played from the ASUS but tried the WD this morning and it gives me the 'Play from this track' option.
No idea, of course, why one works and the other doesn't. I'd like to remind whoever's reading my posts that when I use mconnectHD as an interface along with the ASUS NAS, if I tap a track in the middle of an album that track will play and so will the ones that follow it.
Not the end of the world, but I sure find this this anomaly with Naim's app and my ASUS NAS puzzling. Other than that, I like the app very much.
Thanks for all the suggestions and explanations so far!
It sounds like it might be something to do with the server software that is sitting on your nas. It may be worth getting a Qnap with Asset, or a Synology with minimserver. Both are good nases and both Asset and Minim are powerful, flexible upnp servers. The My Cloud is decidedly ropey; no idea about the Asus. I wonder if Asset or Minim would run on it? You could check their websites.
As HH says, the prime suspect has to be the server running on the Asus NAS. Is it showing 'folder view' rather than 'tag view' as this can cause your issue on some servers. Could be time to get your hands dirty and delve into the server settings - or try a different one.
Apologies, HUNGRYHALIBUT...my NAS is a Qnap (TS-220) , not an ASUS, and it has minimserver operating on it (I have minimwatch, also. It used to work, but doesn't want to respond anymore, despite my trashing minimwatch and reinstalling it. My computer is a new iMac.)
I looked up Asset for Qnap and see it's available for all Qnap models as trial/purchase. I've not heard of Asset before—it seems to work like minimserver. Is it preferable? I don't mind spending $30 to purchase it. A big concern I have, though, is that I have a very large collection of classical and jazz titles on my NAS. The music was organized painstakingly with a great deal of forethought into a hierarchy of folders: genres, historical periods, by instrument, vocals (male, female, groups), recitals, etc etc. Even though I have so many files/folders, the systems allows me to easily find most titles. I want to keep this system.
My folder system works well with minimserver, except the fact that 'Play from this track' is missing on the Naim app. Could this me a minimserver issue?
Does Asset replace minimwatch or does it run alongside it?
Here's the website I found that sells Asset:

ChrisSU...my wrong. My NAS is a Qnap TS-220 (see my reply to HH). My router is an ASUS, duh.
Well, that’s really weird in that case. Minim is better for classical, and as you have everything set up it would be a right pain to lose the structure you have now. Basically, it ‘should work’. If it were me, I’d register on the Minim forum and ask for help. Simon Nash, the developer, is really helpful and hopefully will be able to advise. Other than restarting Minim and forcing a rescan via MinimWatch, I don’t know what to suggest. As you have the ‘tap for options’ enabled, it can’t be the Naim App causing the problem, so must be Minim. The only thing I would do, as well as the restart and rescan of a Minim, and before asking Simon, is to clear both the image cache and upnp cache in the Naim App. You’ll find the latter under the upnp input option. The image cache is under ‘other settings’. It will most likely do nothing, but can fix odd things sometimes.

Maybe my theory is correct then? If you are using Minimserver in folder view instead of the more usual tag view, that is when I’ve seen you issue before.

Interesting. I very rarely use folder view in Minim, but trying it just now you’re dead right. I just get play, not play from this track. All other tagged views work properly.
I’ve just checked, and if using folder view with Asset, I still get the ‘play from this track’ option. How peculiar.
Maybe this is also dependent on variables such as App version, Streamer firmware etc. Updating these might be worth a shot.
Definitely a Minim quirk. Everything is up to date but Minim’s folder view won’t do play from here. Synology’s own Musicserver does work that way though.
I did some more experimenting and found that when I navigate to my NAS's main page on the Naim app...the one that shows number of albums, titles & playlists; Artist; Date; Genre; All Artists; Composer; Conductor; [untagged];[folder view]...when I choose pretty any of the contents in folders shown except [folder view] they all have the 'Play from this track' option. The contents of [folder view] however will not give me the 'Play from this track' option.
Could it be a fault with the Naim app?

Do you use folder view by choice or accident? I would always use tag view. (Might have to brush up on your metadata edtitng, though!)
Incidentally, the quote above was from Nick Lees, not me! Not that it matters.
It could be a bug. You should report it using the feedback option in the app (Naim don't routinely follow the forum themselves but do read feedback via the app).

This looks totally like a Minim thing. Both Synology and Windows UPnP servers allow the Naim app to play from this track.
I don’t think it’s a bug. Asset works fine. It’s an issue with folder view in Minim. The answer is not to use folder view.
If its a Minim thing, I strongly suggest it best post the problem on the Minimserver forum - link the post to this Naim forum thread. Minimserver owner/designer/guru Simon "simoncn" will very quickly sort it out
