Power Cable for Uniti Nova and Wilson Audio
Posted by: gtur on 10 January 2018
Hello,
I am a newbie in more ways than one.
Just cashed in all my chips and got wife's permission for Uniti Nova (she wanted simplicity) and Wilson Audio Sophia 3 speakers. Did a demo at home, with spectacular bass. However the sound was very subdued, even with the NAC A5 speaker cables. The dealer recommended upgrading the power cable and having a dedicated AC line as next steps.
In that regard, would you have a recommendation between Naim Power Line (difficult to get *used* in the USA), PS Audio AC-12, Shunyata Research Alpha Digital, Analog or HC for the best option to open up the sound?
Many thanks!
It seems like a very fair assessment to me. Wilsons with a Nova? Really?
Gtur, have you looked into the crossover adjustment yet? It scentirely possible that it had been adjusted by or for the previous owner to dull down too bright a room, whereas the opposite might be needed for you., of course, measuting the response with REW as Huge suggests would help identify if that may be the case.

I would expect problems more at the bass end rather than deficient mid-top if The amp is not up to driving them, not like putting a 500 engine in a Porsche. (Though at least an inexperienced person might keep the Porsche on the road with a 500 engine!)

For now i agree, it is a nice visually combo.
That seems a harsh assessment - and I’m not sure that the OP’s complaint quite fits.
some members in this topic find that the nova is not the best amp for the wilson sophia. The op complaints about the sound and think to invest in power cables to improve.
I think it is better to add to the nova a nap 250, second hand, which will better drive the sophia and reveal more their possibilities.
[@mention:4804681823084713] As you know, Wilson has a wide range. Maybe I wouldn't put Alexia or Alexandria on a Nova. But Sophia 3 and Sabrina seem a reasonable match. [@mention:41551091830475636] The bass performance is actually pretty stunning. Just some tweaking may do the trick for mid-to-low end. Adding components, for me, misses the point of the convenience and simplicity of All-in-Ones. Otherwise, I would've tried Sonos Connect digital-out into a McIntosh Integrated.
Here in the U.K. the Sabrina costs £19,000 and the Nova costs £4,000. That’s £23,000, and seems a totally unreasonable match to me. My 272/555 and 300, with a £4,000 set of speakers, such as the Kudos S10, would cost about the same, and it would be really interesting to hear the two systems side by side. Just down the road from me one can find lots of mullets in the sea. That’s where they should be, rather than in one’s living room. But if you are happy with what you have, then that’s great.
There’s a current thread about mullets...
I seem to recall Naim demoing Nova with Focal Supra 2 to good aclaim, though admittedly those are little more than half the new Sophia’s value so only about 2.5xthe value of the Nova not nearly 5x. And before I upgraded to Dave, I auditioned speakers that were about 2.5x the new value of the remainder of my system, and they sounded wonderful - though again that is a lesser differentisl than the OP’s.
What matters is that it sounds right to the listener - but of course in this case it doesn’t.
The question is whether the fact of it being a mullet is the cause of the dullness, or other factors such as the speaker set-up or room factors. Am I wrong in having gathered that where a mullet becomes a mismatch the problem is usually at the bottom end, rather than a dullness?
Given the OP’s position, he can fairly easily try the things suggested like investigating the room and chevking the crossover adjustment - and of course he might be able to borrow another amp to try as well (and if that does make all the difference then he’ll know the way to go, though maybe worth having his Nova checked to make sure it is performing as it should before a final conclusion).
Is it worse than running a Nait with DBL ?
Bet it would be far more satisfying with a LP12 as source
Using Tidal only the investment is crazy, I would say something like 1/10 th price would bring a great setup for such "quality" streaming
Status symbol or not

All the "default" demonstrations being done in the Seattle area for hi-fi speakers and amps, whether Magnolia or various Definitive Audio or Naim stores seem to be done via Tidal, even for the $600k+ setups. Could be just a coincidence, but I think Seattle dealers may be in touch with the clientele like me who are heavy users of Spotify/Pandora/Tidal.
The quality of streaming may continue to improve over the years. I hope Uniti updates keep up.
