Has your Core gone off into its own world ?
Posted by: rjstaines on 11 January 2018
Having resolutely determined I should stay with my NS01 and ignore the Core for a while, until the firmware settles down, I went and bought a Core at the weekend. The good Lord knows why (and he 'ain't told me yet), but I'm putting it down to curiosity. In my business days, this expenditure would have been labelled "Research & development"... today it's labelled 'Christmas presents'
Well I didn't expect serious problems right from the off, but that's what I've got... the Core doesn't see any of my ten network drives ! And no amount of factory resets & power cycles of Core & NAS devices (QNAP TS x53A and Netgear ReadyNAS's) have so far pursuaded it to recognise other devices.
For those thinking 'he's done something stupid', that's what I was thinking too for most of yeaterday, but the thing is, even the NS01 sees the Core as a network drive, so the networking settings must be right (mustn't they?)
Has anyone else had this sort of problem... Core not seeing network devices.. ?
Roger
a poisoned gift.....but i am sure the antidote will be found ( return to the shop)
You might check if the NAS is “UPnP” enabled so that the Core can “see” it

I'm struggling with the concept of a domestic situation that includes 10 NAS drives! Maybe I have something in common with the Core?

With all of the gear Roger rocks, any fewer than 10 network drives would be a “mullet”, of a kind.
Carry on.

Do not say that you haven’t been warned ...
David Hendon will probably help you Roger, but if you look under the Core simulator at the top of this page...under general operation...music shares....it says the default setting is disabled, you need to turn that on,and it should start scanning your network for devices.I am no expert, but do own a Core myself, give this a try.
As No Quarter said as first thought.
I am assuming that you have updated the Core firmware and the IOS app? You need to do both together.
But although this update of the Core was supposed to have improved the Core's ability to find shares on the network, I recall that Jon Honeyball reported, before he left the forum, that with the update his Core could no longer see either of his Synology NASs. So I do wonder whether Naim have a bug with their new firmware.
So if you aren't getting anywhere, I suggest you give Phil a ring at Naim and see what he suggests. Also you could take it back to your dealer and see whether it can see their NAS drives. If it can't then get them to give you a replacement.

Sadly I think Phil is away at the moment, but try giving Steve Hopkins a call at the Naim factory.

Bear in mind that my background is in IT... 50 years of accidentally losing data off various computers around Europe makes one acutely aware of the need for backup, first and second levels even! So I have NAS's for my music (4 tb QNAP), first level backup of my music (4 drive Netgear ReadyNAS), and my original music sources before any editing. I have a largeish capacity NAS that's got all my data stuff on it (12tb QNAP) and I have an old HP Windows Home Server that backs up all the computers in the house (of which, being an IT person, there are several from Win XP, Win7, 8 and 10). There's also a Zoneripper NAS that cost me bugger all on eBay but had some music files left on it... and then there are the UPNP instances of various PCs and laptops.
So, although I said 10 drives and all of them are 'seen' by my NS01, only the one NAS (4tb QNAP) is ever made 'active' as a music source (share) to the NS01... and this is the share I'd love to see appearing on my new CORE.
I can understand your struggle, Chris, and for most folks any more than one NAS would be a waste, but this is the cross I have to bear as a result of spending upwards of fifty years in front of computers, disk drives and angry end users... Don't let anyone tell you that life in the IT world is simple
The Workgroup field may be set to NAIM under Manage Music -> Music Share Settings. I set to WORKGROUP as I am Windows based. It may work for you.

It shouldn't make any difference because Workgroups ended with Windows XP and anyway the Core is Linux not Windows....

Thanks... I tried this... it didn't fix it.

Please tell me more... Core simulator is where?
On the streaming audio page, scroll up to the pinned posts, the 5th one or so down is entitled something like Uniti Core Support Simulator.
The simulator description is a bit misleading, it isn't a functionality simulator, it takes you through to a page, click on the picture of the Core and it takes you to the FAQ style online manual.

Hi Roger
EOINK has it right,it is kind of a pain to find...as he said,at the top part of the streaming audio page 5th topic down, click on that....then click on www.naimaudio-support....then click on the little picture of the Core....left side of the page click on general operation...then click on music shares...this is basically you online user manual. It actually walks you through each step at the right side of the page...with pictures.
Good luck
You can also get it via the product page on the Naim website. You scroll down to the bottom of the UnitiCore page and there is a link there. I think it's called "Support" there and once you are into the simulator, you can also browse it for the Atom,,Star and Nova if you want.

Thanks... this still draws a blank page, not a network share or drive in sight
Of course as it’s probably had its firmware updated maybe you need to turn the power off a few times. Best to wait 15 minutes before turning it on again each time. No harm trying!
Phil
On another thread about the Core firmware update. Tom from Naim suggested a factory reset of the Core to fix a post-firmware update issue. The member with the problem had to do two factory resets before it worked as intended. But this didn't work in another instance.
Anyway as its new and you haven't got far with it yet, doing one or two factory resets might be worth a try.
To do a factory reset of the Core, you completely unpower it, press and hold the standby button on the front panel then turn the power on again. Keep holding the standby button in until the light above the front panel USB socket flashes. Then you can release the button and let it finish its normal startup.

crumbs. I was thinking of buying a core.
blimey.
Well, I've done 2 factory resets as per David's instructions... no change.
Then I've removed the internal disk, wondering if, with no internal disk, this would force it to look elsewhere (on the network) and I've factory reset it 4 more times... still 'No disk found'.
Rather than throw it out of the window (we live in a bungalow, so the effect would not be very dramatic), I've unplugged the Core. I'll leave it unplugged overnight and see if it has relented by tomorrow morning.
Meanwhile I'm off with a bottle of port to listen to my NS01 / NDS playing music from my network music NAS.

So was I, but had decided, on the basis of other threads, to leave the purchase a while until the firmware settled down... and then up popped this particular Core at my dealers... and I succumbed.
I hope you are of a stronger will than I, analogmusic.
Don't give up on it. As I said before, take it back to your dealer and/or talk to Naim (Steve Hopkins as Phil is away apparently.)

Update...
well, the good folks at Naim have 'dialled in' to my Core and figured out why it wasn't seeing any network drives. Seems it was a problem resolving the master browser on the network, which they have now fixed on my machine. The suspect, it seems, is an old HP Windows Home Server which backs up each Windows computer overnight. These are no longer sold by HP and it's a good 10 years (ish) old. So I now have a 'working' Core...
First task - import my music stores from the NS01. I have 3 music stores (as distinct from network shares) - one in the NS01 and two external ones on a NAS drive. The NS01 combines the music from all three and presents it as 'music store'. Having the external stores allows me to categorise rips a bit... e.g. 'New CDs'. I can copy the contents of 'new CDs' and take it to my off-site backup (aka second Naim server) and then merge the new ones into the main music store. Let's not go too deeply into this arrangement; I might be falling foul of some legislation that limits me to only one electronic copy of a CD.
So - first question:
Can I have more than one ripped music store on the Core? so far, it doesn't seem so, it has a 'music store' and its on either the internal drive or on a network drive - not both ! ...am I right?
Glad to hear you got it sorted out,the guy to help you is David Hendon,on this forum anyway. As far as I know, there is only one store, and that is for the CDs that you actually ripped on the Core.Everything else will be a share, myself I have a 3Terabyte external drive plugged into the USB port on the back of the Core. This drive holds all the music I have, but it did take quite a few hours for all the music to show up in the app.
