Radio Paridise CD FLAC Stream
Posted by: mackb3 on 12 January 2018
Now available for iOS and Android. When available via Naim streamers?
It would be nice to have it, and it's been discussed here, so Naim are aware of it too. I suspect integration into streamers will not be all that straightforward, as the way RP have implemented it is different to a regular iRadio stream, and they can't just provide a URL for Naim/vTuner to use.
I suspect that Naim will be reluctant to put a lot of resources into making this happen. Their approach on the new streaming platform has been to move away from native support of streaming services, and add Chromecast and Airplay as ways to access a much wider range of web streams than they could ever hope to support themselves. Time will tell how successful this is. The best method I've found so far has been to play RP on my Mac, and send it to my streamer using Airplay.
The app seems to take a while to start playing the FLAC steam... (that’s on my iPad Pro).
Not everyone has AirPlay on their streamers (unless they have the new uniti range)
I've tried to use the RP app on my Macbook and send it via optical to the SU. But, I can't get the lossless stream to play at all. The lossy stream works without a problem.
My WiFi can stream multiple HD video streams simultaneously, so it's not the issue.

I have used an Airport Express to play it into my NDX, and that works fine, as does a direct optical connection from a Mac. If that isn't working, you may need to check your settings in Audio Midi and/or Sound Preferences.

Thanks ChrisSU, yeah using an Airport express is a good idea.
Although the problem isn't getting audio out of the Macbook. It's the Lossless RP stream that doesn't work for me.
lossless stream over Bluetooth from my Android phone works fine however. So it's either the mac app, or my Macbook that is having issues.
The RP folk thought that FLAC could only be streamed on a per-track basis rather than as one long continuous stream. That's why it requires an app to do something clever to make it appear to be a continuous stream, which can't be done with the Naim streamers.
The RP folk were slightly behind the times though, and the FLAC standard can accommodate a proper stream now.
So I reckon that a genuine FLAC stream will be along at some point. Fingers crossed that means Naim streamers can handle it easily enough, maybe with a small firmware update?
If you have a NAS that offers the logitech media server LMS as an app, you can use this to stream the flac radio paradise to any upnp device. You need to install the LMS plugins radio paradise and upnp bridge for this.
Greetings
Gert

No doubt there's a simple explanation - if only you know where to look! Will your optical connection play other lossless streams?
Thanks Gert. I will have a look into the Logitech media server software for my Qnap. Or I'll just wait in hope that Naim implements the lossless RP stream for all their streamers.
chrissu, yes all other audio plays fine over optical. It's just the Flac RP stream. I can't get it to play at all, it just buffers, but never starts playing the stream.

Does the RP FLAC stream play OK directly from the Mac built-in speakers?
The stream does not play through my iPhone7 or iPad Air Speakers but does play through he headphones and via Bluetooth to my portable Bose. Hope Naim can update the streamers since they integrate PR. I haven't heard of any other manufacturers that do.
Hope Naim bring out a firmware to play Flac RP but for now RP320 sounds pretty good via my 272.

Nope that's the thing, the RP stream in Lossless does not work at all.
Okay. Re-installing the RP app has solved the issue. Thanks for the other suggestions.

Really hope we get this functionality on the old range of Naim Streamers!

Listening to RP now in it's full Lossless glory! And just heard Bill promote the new FLAC stream; that it is available on the iOS, Android, Mac, Apple TV, and Windows apps. But will also be available on a few other devises very shortly... Hmm could Naim be one of those?
Sounds interesting, but found 4 different Radio Paridise Apps in App-Store, which one is the correct one?
I found the correct one.

There were updated versions of the RP apps released for the FLAC streams, so I'm guessing you were on an older version?
I just tried to find an internet radio station streaming in FLAC so that I could test whether my 272 would handle it. If it would, then hopefully when RP releases a FLAC stream URL, it will be a simple matter of adding it to vtuner.
But in my brief search (I'm supposed to be doing something else at the moment!) I couldn't find an existing station with a working FLAC stream URL.
If anyone knows of a working one, i.e. where it's just a http://xxx address rather than an app, please shout out.

My bet is that this won't happen. I would just get an Airport Express and be done with it - used ones are getting very cheap now.
I just installed the RP plugin on my LMS running of things Synology NAS and success , I can stream. Funny enough Star displays both art cover and the song title/artist. Does not go back to displaying the full art cover .
Just get it working with LMS and it sounds freakin‘ great, wow! One great radio station gets even better...

I tried this, but it seems that my NAS could only run LMS version 7.7.6 whereas the PR FLAC stream apparently requires a later version. Slightly annoying, as the streamers can see LMS as a server, but no RP in sight.
If you have a Synology NAS you might need to enable the beta versions in the package center settings to enable a more recent LMS version.
Unusually I've not bothered with Synology beta testing this time. I have the latest DSM 6.1.4-15217-5 released on 12/12/17 & it carries LMS 7.7.6-113 & as far as I can see does not have PR.
I'm happy enough with the Naim vTuner 320kb/s for PR & I'm OK to wait in the hope it might be possible to get the FLAC service with PR expanding what they make available & it can be streamed via future Naim streamer software & that hopefully its possible with the legacy products.
