Upgrade path for 202/250
Posted by: Hifli_Phil on 16 January 2018
Hi, my first post.
I was introduced to Naim a year ago and am very happy with my set up.
202/250, non-Naim PSU, DacV1, stage line, Project debut carbon, speakers ATC SCM7. Music from Mac Bluetooth to V1. Small room 9 x 10 foot.
I am looking to upgrade to;
282? Or
Uniti 2 to take advantage of built in dac, Bluetooth, and can bi amp speakers.
i can find no information as to the quality and level of the internals.
Sound quality is vital to me. I listen to predominately female vocals of off the track indie music.
Any advise?
272 ?
advice you are in the right place as James N mentioned 272 and sell 202 DR the 250.2
I choose slightly differnet path, NDX, started with 202 added HCDR and then moved to 282, DR your 250.2
282 gave a lot and i mean a lot more detail esp vocals, sound stage great Pre Amp
i'm with you on female volcals - Tori Amos, Melody Gardot, Kate Bush, Carol King, London Grammar etc etc
enjoy the journey
If you want a neat system without too many boxes, a 272 is a good call, as you could lose the 202, V1, and possibly the Mac too. So down to 2 boxes, with the option to add an external PSU to the 272, which brings big improvements.
If you don't mind a few boxes, a 282 would certainly be a great match for your 250, but then your source may show up weaknesses, especially if you're using a Bluetooth source. So you would probably want to improve your source first. What music do you play (over Bluetooth or whatever) as this may also be holding back your system. Sticking with an optimised Mac is still a possible option.
How important is vinyl to you? A preamp upgrade has the advantage of improving both analogue and digital sources, but again, your source is the weak point here, so you might consider improving that first, as a 282 might only expose the weaknesses of a relatively cheap turntable.
282 will require, as a minimum, a HiCap to function if your power amp is 250.
If streaming is on the agenda, I would have a look at 272 - a combined pre-amp and streamer.
Upgrade ?
simple. Get rid of non naim PSU and buy a real hi cap
Easy one this .....282 but you will also require a power supply for it such as Hicap/Supercap.
Even though I own a 282 and choose it over a 272 that was only because I favour vinyl over streaming. But in your case because you are using your mac as your main source via bluetooth I think a 272 is best and that way you can trade in your dac and put it towards a used XPS2 for the 272. You will be very happy with the Naim app over bluetooth I think.
I have a good deal locally on a second hand Unit 2, which does streaming, cd player and amp that is why I was asking as I can get no info on the quality.
Nav- 272 is a stretch new and I can't see any locally?
Thanks for all the good advise.

Obviously
Uniti 2 is entry level and compromised by being all in one box, it's somewhere below 5 series. Your pre is a step above 5 series and your power 2 steps above 5 series. The quatiy of the 272 is subject to some debate but self powered is reckoned around 202 level ± a bit. A 282 will be a step up from the 202 and a good match for the 250. That way leads to further upgrades of source to justify it, particularly the turntable and if this is on the cards get a 282. The 272 is a source in a pre and can be lifted with power supply upgrades but only so far. Auditioning is the usual way to decide.

A Uniti is not anywhere near 202/250 in sheer performance
Obviously a better preamp for your poweramp but 282 is insane money imo and a standard answer in here.
Available S/h or if you don't mind older design the 82 if you can find a serviced one
As for powersupplies its not really possible or allowed to discuss in here beside the usually evangelistic recommendations, which only you can decide are valuable.
Perhaps look into better TT and non bluetooth or source in generel

usually evangelistic recommendation? either you haven't heard the others or got not much understanding of what a HI-Cap does
and 282 being insane money - maybe for you it is (and there's always people who want a brand new S class at the price of a 1980 Mercedes S car) , but then I wonder what new strange words will come from you about the price of 552?
I don't agree that 282 is insane money.

usually evangelistic recommendation? either you haven't heard the others or you got poor musical ears.
If I was in bad mood today I could have been pissed of by such a comment, but I think I just let it blow in the wind
