Wifi volume control on Naim pre
Posted by: Arthur Bye on 17 January 2018
Is there a way to control the analog volume on a Nac 552 through wifi?
After having a Nac 272, I am totally smitten with controlling everything through my iPad. Well done Naim!
Now I would like that same single control point on my main system (NDS/552/500) The Naim app allows pretty much full control over everything except the volume control with the NDS is there any kind of work around for this? Perhaps some kind of third party wifi remote control re-sending unit?
i don't really want to have to wait around for the Nac-572 pre at whatever insane price it will be.

No - afraid not and don’t hold your breath for the 572.
Does the system automation function not work with the 552 (connect the RC5 in on the 552 to the remote out on the NDS) ?
System automation should do the trick. You just need a cable to connect the two and enable in the app - no need for anything fancy, a cheap RCA-3.5mm cable will do just fine.
System remote should work your dealer should be able to supply a cable and set up volume control input switching as required.

I control my 282 vol with the naim app on the ipad.
My 282's (RC5) is connected to the NDX's (Remote out) via a 3.5mm to RCA cable.
The same approach should work on the 552.

Although if you're comfortable with using Amazon (other retailers are available), reading a manual, plugging in a cable and pressing a few buttons then you can do it yourself.
If you get stuck then you'll find plenty of help on the forum
Thanks for all the speedy responses.
I guess I'm missing something here. I don't see any volume control for the NDS in the Naim app on my iPad. Shouldn't that be at the very bottom of the screen? I understand the bit about connecting the 3.5mm RC5 from one device to another. That just extends the infra red remote control from one device to another. That doesn't do anything with wifi remote control.
I'm looking to control the volume through the iPad app in the same manner that you can on the N-272. Perhaps there is something I'm not seeing here.

The NDS can provide system automation via the app which will send control signals from the Remote out connection to other connected equipmet. You need to enable system automation on the NDS to do this. Worth having a read of the manual and then it should be clear.
To add, you need to enable vol control on the naim app.
This rings a bell, I've just looked and on the naim app, go to the settings icon and under 'other settings' there is an option to show volume control which you can switch on or off. Hope this does the trick..
I Wouldn't be without the system remote functionality..
Ok, I finally broke down and read the manual. Looks like there is a solution there with System Automation. Who would have thought? When all else fails......RTFM!
So, I've had this feature all along, and did'nt even know it.

Is this a digital volume control within the NDS, or does this actually control the analog volume control on the 552?

The volume control knob will magically turn when you hit the +/- buttons on the app. Sometimes there's a short delay followed by a big change in volume which I suspect is different for different systems, depending on speaker sensitivity, but basically, it works.

It's analogue.
What NDS does, it basically sends a numerical command (one for up and one for down) akin to the one sent by the infrared remote control. But this time it's sent by a cable from NDS to 552.
So NDS is not actually controlling anything - it's merely relaying a command from a tablet to your amp.
Oh.......all very interesting.
So the RC5 outlet on the back of my 552 is RCA. Does this mean I need an RCA to 3.5mm mono phono plug for these devices to talk to one another?
Yes. Single RCA plug to mono 3.5mm plug.

Yes. My dealer gave me one when I bought my 282, and they are very cheap. I replaced it with another much shorter one later as this helped with cable dressing. It cost 65p.
I was done then Chris, I think I paid 89p..

exactly
System Automation is a key feature, IMHO — worth setting up correctly. My NDX controls the 552 including Volume, the Naim Dac, and CD555.

Wow, that was pretty easy. All up and running!
Didn't need any rhodium plated Deltron plugs, Litz wiring, 99.999% OFC, or directional anything.
Works a treat!

Maybe yours sounds better
FYI some early 552's require a small internal modification (and the cable) to make this happen. A dealer task.
i have an early 552, but it's been recapped. Seems to work fine
