QNAP NAS Updating
Posted by: john s on 17 January 2018
My QNAP works well but it can be really frustrating as well. Transferring music from my Mac to the NAS is fine unless the QNAP needs updating - which seems to happen pretty regularly. Then I can't make a connection to the QNAP without updating the firmware first. I only use it for streaming so most of the updating is unlikely to be useful, but I have always been told to keep things up to date to avoid pc related problems.
Has anyone else experienced this and found a solution (other than doing the firmware updates that is)?
Does the QNAP have an auto update function that will do them so that your NAS is up to date when you come to use it? I generally prefer to keep auto-updaters turned off and choose what and when to update myself, but perhaps in this case, it would save you some hassle?
I rarely access my Qnap so don’t know if it needs updating or not, for months on end. If you map it in file explorer you should always be able to drag music across, regardless of updates.
That is what I'd like as well - I do have it mapped in the Mac version of file explorer and generally I just drag between file windows and the transfer works. But when a firmware update comes out it seems to stop the connection happening unless I do the update - which then needs a restart, all of which takes ages.
I'll have a look and see if there is an auto update.
I'm (I'll be) very surprised if the QNAP does not have an auto update option. I have my Synology on auto up-date so I never need to remember to get it done , & it sends me an e-mail whenever its done it. It gets aprx one a month on average & I've never encountered any problem with it. It's most always the basic OS DSM & invariably security, business, backup, other spurious stuff & the inevitable 'vulnerables'. The audio stuff Media Server (UPnP) gets three or four updates per year, mostly a change required to allow it operate with the new DSM.
I can't find a setting for this, only a setting for auto checking if an update is available when the web interface is accessed.
My QNAP servers probably get new updates every couple of months but these are only notified when I log in as admin to their web pages. They also give the option whether or not to postpone the update and or restart the server before updating the firmware.
Hi John, looking at mine.. QTS 4.3.3.0404. ControlPanel>Firmware Update>Live Update, there is only option to check, not to install. I have never experienced a disconnect related to a pending update.
Under ControlPanel>Notifications, you can set up your email server / account credentials so the NAS will send you an email when firmware updates are available, and for other stuff like antivirus scan outcomes. It hasn't ever sent notifications related to installed apps however, such as Twonky. Looking at Twonky, there isn't a notification option.
Are you using Twonky or the built-in QNAP DLNA server? Perhaps it's that. I use Twonky.
I have no issues at all. And for music transfers I use the QSYNC utility on my laptop which syncs rips and purchased downloads using a predefined folder mapping.
You can get the QNAP to notify you of application updates too.
It's also worth installing QManager on your phone or tablet, the QNAP can then send push notifications to your device.
I've never experienced a block on shared folders when an update is pending, we use some of the business based devices at clients and these are always a bit behind as we like to plan the updates and these have never done this either.
The QNAP will close folder access when undertaking some tasks like disk scans but these are normally initiated manually say when the device hasn't been shutdown correctly after a power failure.
Just a question from my side: upon installing my QNAP TS-251C, my dealer switched-off the "Auto Update"function. So my QNAP did not received any update for about 2 years. I've considered a manual update, but in the back of my head I heard a voice saying: "If it aint broke, don't fix it".
I only use MinimServer to serve my FLAC music to the NAC-N 272. Should I get the firmware updated and have a risk that things will not function the way I expect them to?
Thanks in advance for your replies!

I run a bunch of QNAP servers – five at the last count – and keep them all updated with latest versions of the firmware, as this is worth doing for security updates and the like. Three of them run MinimServer to supply music to NDS, Muso Qb and a (relatively ancient) original NaimUniti, and I've encountered no problems with them whatsoever.
The QFinder package running on my computer prompts me when updates are available, and the QManager on my phone allows the servers to alert me of updates and other data from the servers. It all runs very smoothly – oh, and if you haven't done so, it's also worth checking whether your MinimServer install is up to date, which MinimWatch on your computer will do for you, too.
Hope that helps.
Thanks all - I must be doing something wrong when mounting the qnap on my mac I think - I'll have a good look through these ideas but as I do all of my ripping/transfers on the mac I'm not sure if some of the tablet/phone ides will apply (plus I use Asset - but updating the apps is fairly easy it's the firmware updates that cause the "lock out" I think). I did try Qfinder pro that I saw on the qnap website but as yet it doesn't seem to have the commands I expected e.g.tools! I'll keep trying.....makes you understand why some people buy the Melco though.
Three of our QNAPs tell me if a FW update is available when I start or restart them. The fourth one (an older TS-410) does not. But I check manually when the others pop up the alert. App updates are notifications only. Nothing happens automatically. The frequency is variable. Maybe 4-6 times a year.
Thanks Andrew!

Hi Klout10. So theres three reasons for updates: fix an existing problem, fix a newly discovered security vulnerability, add a new feature. The first two reasons, my preference would be to address them. The third reason is less motivating. Most releases come with release notes which explain what is happening.
My experience (about 3 years now of updates ) is that QNAP updates have not incurred any penalty.. they seem to have their release management under control (knock on wood).
Thanks again
