HiCap on CD Transport
Posted by: Guinnless on 17 January 2018
I'm making the assumption that my CD5XS when set up as a transport won't benefit from a HiCap.
TIA
Correct. the Hicap upgrade powers the analogue output board.
Thanks for the confirmation
????
OK it looks my link plug is not the correct one. It is a 4 pin one but the paddle doesn't quite line up with the upgrade socket.
I'm sure its probably fine but rather than take a chance I've left the Hicap in place. So the CD5XS is now DAC'd and Hicap'd ☺ Overkill but risk free.
If any 4 pin link plug is fine then I can give it a whirl.
The CD5XS and CDX2.2 used as dedicated transport only is probably fine, but lots of wasted electronics paid for - not in use.
A pity Naim never released a cd-transport only
Fwiw I prefer my CD5X powered by a Flatcap 2 rather than a Hicap but thats another issue
There are only two 4 pin paddle link plugs, the difference being the length of the paddle - the longer one is for pre-amps, the shorter one for the CD player. As long as you have the short one then it should be the correct one.
Thanks James. I've found the correct (short) link plug. ???? I'll do the swap tomorrow.
Perol: I agree it would be nice if Naim did a transport only but hey-ho. I always preferred my CD3.5 with a Hicap over the Flatcap 2. ☺
I've been enjoying my DAC and decided to do the firmware update as mine was 2.5.4. Sadly it didn't work and I ended up in the same position as this guy. Yep the USB stick worked fine as it was playing 24/96 WAV files earlier this morning.

I've spoken to a very helpful chap at Naim customer service and the DAC is off to Class A at Sheffield to be returned to Naim HQ. I'll forgo digital audio until it's sorted - there's no firmware updates on the LP12 so that should be fine!
That’s terribly bad luck. Hopefully it will be sorted and back quickly to you.
