Adding artwork to dsf files being stored in the downloads folder on my Core

Posted by: docmark on 22 January 2018

Hello.  I've been trying to add artwork to dsf files stored on my Core.  I've been using Mp3tag v2.85.  When I open a folder in Mp3tag, the artwork usually appears in a box in the lower left corner.  However, when I save this configuration and transfer the folder to my Core, more often than not, no album artwork appears.   What's going on?  Thanks.

I am pretty sure the Core does not allow this on music ripped by a non Naim source.

Is the artwork a jpeg with the file name ‘folder.jpg'?

Hi Gazza - I don’t see why not.  The dsf files in question are downloaded from various sites, and I then do any metadata editing in Mp3tag before transferring them into the downloads folder on the Core.

A question then for David Hendon who will no doubt pop up some time today, he is our go to on such matters regarding the Core.

Thank you for that Gazza, but I'm not sure I deserve your confidence.

dsf is not listed by Naim as a supported format for the Core. I haven't tried using it myself though, so I don't know whether it works.

But Naim are clear that in the downloads folder, artwork should be called folder.jpg and be located in the same sub-folder as the music files. So embedding it in the dsf file is probably just not supported by Naim.

I just looked at Core specs & see DSD is supported.    It shows in the specs as "DSD - 64 and 128Fs",   so if it turns out the problem is Core does not support art in the normal DSD .dsf file extension it needs to be reported as a bug.

DSD files are normally stored as DSF - in fact, in most cases they should be, as this allows embedded metadata, unlike DFF. The few DSD files I have are all DSF, and Naim streamers will happily play them and view the metadata.

Exactly,  I have a lot of DSD albums,  all are .dsf & all have art embedded as I bought them.  Some art I have edited (fine tuning),  but bottom line is DSD.dsf  art & other metadata editing works just the same as with .wav.

Actually, now I think about it, I had to add artwork manually before my streamer/Naim app could see it, although the other metadata was fine. I can see now that I have separate artwork in the album folder as a .jpg and this is what the Naim app displays.

Could be just the app taking its time before it can see the images - try clearing both the UPnP cache and the Image cache on the app, and see if that helps.

Are you saying your .dsf file does or does not have embedded art ??  And also that the serve is reading the separate .jpg art 'folder'.   My Synology & app read all the DSD album art from the embedded art,  although I frequently improve the embedded art,  I then leave the new ,jpg loose in the album folder,  but whatever the app reads the embedded art.

This how I see a DSD on my windows file view.

Thanks for all of the replies.

I’ve found a way to add artwork to my dsf files as well as other files like aiff, etc.  I found an app called Metadatics for Mac (I believe it’s also available for Windows).  Within the app, I can effortlessly add album artwork by adding Folder.jpg to the folder in question on my Mac.  I hit Save, then go back to wherever the folder is stored - usually on a 2 TB USB drive I use when downloading music files from the Internet.  I then drag ‘n drop the fixed folder to the Downloads folder on the Core.  It works beautifully!

Thanks for that update......a very useful data addition, just a pity you had to find for yourself rather than from Naim via a good manual, welcome to the club.
