Some question from new ND5 XS user...

Posted by: Judge on 02 February 2018

After switching to streaming a year ago, and having auditioned 272/250 combo and ND5XS, I decided the latter was a better path for me, sounded great with Nait XS2 / Flatcap XS already have... So, had a look through FAQs, but still have a couple of queries;

Thanks.

If you use iRadio, you can stop the stream from the app rather than muting it, to save data use. I mostly use UPnP, and if I want to stop the music before it has finished, either pause it, or clear the play queue.

N-Stream is the app that preceded the Naim app, so is more or less obsolete, although it might still run on some devices. Or did you mean N-Serve, which is only for the Unitiserve and HDX?

System automation is a great feature if you want to control volume from the app, rather than needing the remote to hand as well. You just need a 3.5mm to RCA cable connecting streamer to amp, which is very cheap.

You can press the stop button on the front of the ND5 or on the remote, which will stop the I radio stream. Then you can mute the Nait if you like.

I'm not exactly sure what if anything actually turns the iRadio stream/connection off on the touch of a button. Judging by my NDX case temp something is going on,  so I have now for the last month set the NDX to time limit the internet connection (using the remote control "Tools"   on the front display scroll to Inputs>iRadio>Auto Disconnect & pick your number).   Since I been doing this I've found the case temp to be a few degrees lower after (e.g.) an overnight rest.

Re System Automation;  you need a 3.5 to 3.5 cable between the ND5 & Nait XS remote connection sockets on the rear panel.  Any cable is good,  nothing fancy,  stereo or mono both work.   Read the manual for how to set it up & check(tick) all the options in the Naim app 'Other Settings'

I park my NDX on the USB or UPNP input.  If I pause Spotify, it unpauses on its own.

Automation is key; don’t miss it!  The Naim app and a wire from the ND to the amp for RC duties are all you need.

As Chris and HH say. Either way to stop the stream works.

Thanks for the guidance folks and I’ll give automation a go.

N-Stream is the app referred to in the manual.

N-stream is no longer available and has been replaced by the Naim app. It does the same thing in much the same way though there are people who miss the look and feel of the old app.

Congratulations that is a very nice system designed to be together I had an ND5XS for almost 2 years and always thought it an excellent streamer.  I found it responded well to being placed on the top shelf of a rack with a degree of isolation but apart from that I wouldn't worry to much just connect it up and enjoy and yes the newer Naim app is your only option I think.  I found that music files loaded onto a usb stick and plugged into the front sounded better than streaming via a Nas but mostly I used it for streaming Tidal and iRadio Linn Jazz radio always sounded excellent.

You must have an old manual! If the streamer is a few years old, you might want to check that its firmware is up to date. Otherwise you will miss out on some of new functions that were added.

The manual I have been reading is the current reference one on the website.  I will check the firmware - the retailer did advise it was the current version.

Its a shame the manual is not kept up to date, no excuse, the n-Stream was changed to the Naim app in 2014.

There is Naim app info in www.Naim>Product>Accessories   ......   https://www.naimaudio.com/product/naim-app

Okay, thanks.

All up and running with automation now.

Sounds really excellent too!  Very pleased.
