Second system suggestions
Posted by: m.paul taylor on 05 February 2018
i have a pair of Kans in good condition and am looking for a one piece of kit which can play CDs and power the Speakers. If it could stream that would be a bonus. Any suggestions for Naim kit which will do the job would be appreciated
UnitiLite, Uniti2 or UnitiStar - the new kid in town.
Superuniti, you'll appreciate its dac section and its price.
Superuniti has no cd player.
I have a pair of Kans, they need a fairly good amplifier to get the best out of them, however whilst the Superuniti has a good amp 80W into 8 ohms, it does not have a CD player, so perhaps the UnitiStar if the budget allows?
I forgot to say that I would like to connect my TV to the player. Does that change things?
+1 for the SuperUniti, perhaps with a pre-loved CD5XS, still a whole lot less than a UnitiStar....... and somewhat more elegant, but that’s just IMHO
Just a thought.

Works for all the old / new unities. Just an optical cable between the tv and the Naim thing. No coax, so you ensure galvanic isolation.
M.Paul,
it may seem a silly advice, but my contribution is: unless you really need two systems, and/or can't get rid of the Kans for whatever reasons, don't have two systems. Sell the Kans and enjoy one only rig. I have verified that the amount of potential unhappiness is directly proportional to the number of apparently innocent, 'second systems' one has. That said, it's none of my business of course.

P.S. And if you really do want a second system, don't buy a SuperUniti: not only, as Ardbeg10 has pointed out, it has no CD player, but IMO it sounds dull, boring and bloated. At the risk of ending up with a very lively system, in need of being a little 'tamed', I'd surely go for the UnitiLite, which is a misunderstood little masterpiece.
Best,
M.
Thanks Max
the second system is a thousand miles away from the main one!
thanks for the recommendation - it is really helpful as I have no idea of what to pick
ps main system is NDS, 555dr, 552 dr, 300dr and Titan 606 so I am not trying to achieve the same quality!
Be aware that the UnitiLite is limited on power.
The Uniti2 would be my choice. It’s not really up to the Kans, but you know that already.
A sweet system in the colour OLIVE.......... you know it makes sense

After having heard it in a large room driving N-Sats, I'd say it is sufficiently gifted.

All of the Unitis have optical inputs, so as long as your TV has optical out, you’re covered. The new Unitis also have HDMI audio inputs, which should be a better option than optical, but has so far proved to be unreliable for many users.
Find a s/h unitiqute 2 for around 1-1.5K.

I disagree.
l love my second system (Atom, in wall Totems) and my 'third' system (Qu-be) almost as much as my main system.
I would recommend the statement as a second system with nds and 2 555ps.
