Uniti Atom why not use the full display
Posted by: SimonPeterArnold on 06 February 2018
So the Atom has this beautiful screen to display cover art and info yet for 99% of time it only displays just the artwork. In all the picture you see of it it shows using the full screen for the artwork and track/artist info. I take it something changed come release as you cant display anything like they show. Any way its a shame the display is not used to its full ability. I for one would like to see the track/artist info especially when I am trying out new playlists on streaming services. Anyone feel the display is not used to its full ability.
On my Nova, and I’m pretty sure the Atom’s the same, the screen moves to the track information when you’re close to it, presumably the logic being that you can't read It from a distance.
It doesn’t really matter to me, my NDX in my main system is in one of the side bars of a T shaped lounge not visible from the seats, so I never think of looking at the screen. That’s just my take, I know other people have expressed a wish to see the track information, so you’re not alone.

I would agree entirely, it's quite frustrating, even the clock reverts back to album cover however just to be able to display the track/artist info constantly would be acceptable - it's particularly annoying as you say on playlists or radio stations, hopefully it will be addressed in further firmware releases
Agreed, it feels half finished. What really winds me up (I made a thread here a week or two ago) is the false advertising shots that Naim use on their own website, showing screen views that don't exist. Pretty trashy move.

Yep I was well miffed to find it does not do that. I guess it might have done in Preproduction releases.
Dave-Mac, could you be specific. Which screen views shown on the site don't exist?
I don't have any of the new Units here but I did use them last week at Dusseldorf and the screen shots look like the kind I saw there. I don't think there's any intention to show something that's not real, but if something is not accurately shown in the picture then it should be amended, so please be as specific as you can and I'll pass it on to Naim.
I think most are still waiting for the switch Off display option, but I do like the idea of the full display being used.
There's loads of images around that the Atom doesn't replicate here's another about the Volume Display: Link

Yep thats the one.
This ones of the official website, seems to have another background image behind album art. Never seen this. That said its all the other press pics scattered across the internet that show the split view which does not exist that Lord Hillier posted.
Heres some from Audiobarns website and Audio Express
Good point!
It's got to be firmware of functionality that's not accessible from the App. I wondering if it's something changeable by the remote?
The Atom has changed internally, the power on in my replacement unit doesn't 'click' on and off anymore which I'm pleased about.
Found this video from November 2016, this has the split screen and volume differences on.
Too bad that the current models are not able to show this ...

Hi Mercky, There's a clock? My Atom doesn't show one.. but I'd like to get it if it's possible..

This is a feature - I seem to recall noticed it on the Unitis that were at Dusseldorf. Quite subtle though and did depend very much on the cover art.
I'll ask about the split screen.
Richard none of the images we have shown here are currently available through any of the types of streaming. And there is no way to change what it displays or its not documented anywhere. The only thing you can change is to display a clock which pops on for 5 secs then goes back to artwork and you can see the now playing again for about 5 secs unless you walk right up to the unit. But noneof these released images represent currently what is available. Perhaps what you've seen Is from the next firmware update and some of this others are mockups before the final unit was released. Either way it's annoying because it's showing things the unit can't do. As it stands the screen is only half used which seems a waste of resources.

Press the clock button on the remote. It lasts for 5 secs before going back to artwork.
Ah, just checked and sure enough!. Thanks.. never noticed.
I seem to remember that when I collected my “Star” back in September 2017, it displayed full screen images similar to those in the above posts. Unfortunately, the very next day, Naim released the software to allow the unit to format usb attached storage as a music store and the display options (or lack thereof) changed. Of course I could be mistaken - I only had it for a day before the firmware update - and I was busy playing music.
I would really like Naim to prioritise the screen option. Even a display off option would be a great start.
CDBoy, last I heard a screen off option was in the future fw pipeline.
As for the split screen seen on some of the early publicity shots, I'm told by Phil that this was on early firmware but was dropped as everyone who saw it felt that it was fairly useless unless you were up close to the unit, in which case...

hmm, along with screen off option the ability to display track/artist info constantly is a 'must' though, I can understand everything would be a bit small and cluttered in a split screen view
I agree with Mercky. Being able to toggle on/off properly for track/artist info rather than it always revert to artwork after 5 secs would be desirable.
