Unitiserve question
Posted by: gsr on 10 February 2018
Hi,
I've ripped about 500 CDs onto a recently acquired Unitiserve. I have downloaded music on a laptop.
Can I transfer files from laptop to the Unitiserve via Window Explorer? Can't try it as I don't have a USB to USB cable to hand!
Thanks
Gordon

don’t need a cable: you send the downloads into downloads folder. You have to create a sharing network with pc/ unitserve first. When your download is on your music pc folder, you select it and click on send then download folder. Sometimes it takes more than one hour to appear on the app, sometimes it is immediate.
If you find the Unitiserve on your PC, you will see that it has a folder called music, and another called downloads. The music folder is strictly for CDs ripped by the US, and should not be altered via a PC. The Downloads folder is where you put all other music. You can treat it like any other folder, add albums to it by copy & paste or drag & drop. These files can’t be edited through N-Serve, so make any changes to metadata via you computer.
Neither of the previous posts completely explain that your PC and the Unitiserve need to be connected to your router, although it's implicit in what Chris said. You will probably find it easiest to "map" the downloads folder to a spare drive letter in your PC, then it's a doddle to transfer the files from your PC to the downloads folder of the Unitiserve. (This assumes it's a 2TB Unitiserve, not one of the original ones.)
another thing to mention is that if you can't see the artwork for the files from your PC, you need to add the cover art for each album into the folder that the CD is in, alongside the track files. The coverart should be a jpg file and called folder.jpg or cover.jpg .
You may find it takes ages for the Unitiserve to see the new files and for them to appear in the app. A couple of hours is common and I have heard of it taking weeks! If this happens to you, come back here and someone will induct you into the mysteries of the Windows DTC tool.
Finally if your Unitiserve isn't on firmware 1.7b, it's worth upgrading that, which you can do yourself. The main advantage is that you get much better more reliable metadata lookup for CD rips with the latest firmware.

Two more things:
Downloads folder needs to be enabled as a SHARE.
Rips folder should, by default, be enabled as STORE.

Are you talking about the SSD version? I don’t remember having to do this.

Indeed - SSD.
I sort of assumed the OP had an SSD version
WIth an internal HD there is indeed no need to enable folders.
All,
Thanks guts for all your replies.
ON the PC, I have the Uniti 2 and Unitiserve listed under network / media devices.
When I click on the server to see the music and download folders, it opens up the Naim UPnP server webpage and shows the following comment
Naim UPnP Server
This is the default web page for the Naim UPnP Media Server hosted by this device. You can manage this media server through any standard UPnP Control Point.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks Gordon
Hi Gordon
Can you not click on the Unitiserve in the Windows Explorer file 'tree'?
It sounds like you may be clicking on an icon somewhere in the window rather than in the file tree maybe...
In my file tree you have My Documents, My Videos etc and it will show the different drives you have connected, eg. C Drive, Unitiserve, removable drives etc
Does that help?
Chris
I remember getting the same problem once and I was on the phone to Phil Harris at Naim who said "it should work" "it's a network problem" and " try rebooting your router".
Having read Chris's answer which beat mine to posting, when I hit this problem I had only an icon for the Unitiserve and not a folder tree. It sounds like you have the same Gordon.
Rebooting the router did indeed sort it out for a while. But the other way is to "map" the downloads folder. Google will tell you how to do this. You will need the name of the Unitiserve which in my case is NSSRVDB67, so you need to find the similar name for yours.

just try to send the file which is on your music pc to download folder, and see after if you see your file in the naim app.
Thanks all.
David,
Tried rebooting but still getting the same message.
I can open the unitiserve in Windows media player showing music (album, artist, genre), videos, pictures, recorded TV but no downloads folder.
Any ideas?
Gordon

You need to be in windows explorer. Media player won't help at all.
You could try putting \\NSSVRxxxx/downloads into windows explorer where xxxx is whatever your Unitiserve name is (you can get it from the app) or maybe put the Unitiserve IP address into Windows server (you can get the IP address from the app too.
But the top advice I can give is:
....map the downloads folder as per my last posting...

Partial success. All of a sudden Unitiserve download is showing up on Windows explorer listing.
David, have mapped this download drive and copied one album over to test. Shows up in Explorer but not listed yet on Unitiserve via Naim app. You mentioned something about Windows DTC to speed this transfer up. Could you elaborate what this is and what I need to do.
Once again guys, really appreciate the help you and this forum in general gives.
Gordon
How old is your Unitiserve? Does it have a 2TB drive? The old version had no downloads folder.
Chris he has mapped the downloads folder, ergo it has got one!
Gordon you could just wait for the files to show up in the app. It may take a while! This is a real shortcoming of the Unitiserve that Naim never bothered to fix for some reason. You can download the Windows DTC from Naim's website but it is firmware version specific, so you should check your US firmware version next. The latest is 1.7b
Once you have it working on your PC you can tell the US to do a rescan, but this is not in any way a 21st century computer interface and I am not the expert on it, so I will leave it to someone else to tell you what to do. Anyway you are almost there!

After an hour or so, the download files are now showing up in the Naim app.....and then gone.....then back again!!!!
All good for the last half hour but is it normal that one minute, they're there and the next, they're not!!??
Gordon
No it's not what you expect to happen, but as long as they stay there now, you don't need to worry about it!
Re my firmware point, you can check the firmware version with your N-Serve app, assuming you are using an IOS device. The Naim app controls the streamer but the N-serve app allows you to edit metadata on rips and the server firmware version will be in one of the setup or about menu options (mine isn't on currently so I can check exactly where). It's worth getting the latest firmware if it isn't on it already as the metadata lookup is much better than with earlier versions.

Thanks David.
I updated the firmware last week to 1.7b.
Gordon
Excellent! You can download the latest version of the Windows DTC from the website if you need it. It's kind of self-explanatory, if you can live with the 1980 style man machine interface!

Hi David,
Cannot locate the Windows DTC upgrade on the Naim website, options are as follows for the Unitiserve. Please advise.
