Updating Supernait

Posted by: m.paul taylor on 17 February 2018

I have a Supernait which I bought pre-2010 (I think about 2008). Is it possible to update it to current day spec? And is it worth it?

What you all need is a new ND555 with (hopefully fingers crossed) 2 x 555DR's a 552DR/500 with full loom Super Lumina.  Don't worry if you have to sell your house or cash in your pensions to achieve this because life is for living today!  But you must not feel any sense of pride in owning the above system but you are allowed to post lots of pictures both front and back from within the tent you now live in.

Lent has started. Such a post is a real temptation in these 40 days.

My dealer was openly hostile to the SN1 - he always said it was compromised by the onboard DAC. He preferred the XS and really rates the SN2.

That is his opinion, the DAC is very good as is the SN overall. The Nait XS/XS-2 is 3 steps down in quality.

Robiwan, the SN1 is a good amp, but it has it's limitations ...

And the dac is entirely switched off when the digital ports are not used.

I don't have time to dem all of Naims range, even less so how it compares with its current competitors. So I put quite a lot of stock in my dealer and his associates opinions - certainly above the majority of posters on the forum - and like I say the SN1 is the one product he was not at all keen on.

The 500 serie and statement also has. Nothing is perfect. Second hand for 1600-1800 euro you cannot go any better than with a SN1.  And yes it is transparant so bad recordings do not sound good but still enjoyable enough like it should be.

Easy !

Fwiw I prefer XS even a Nait 5Si all considered

Just couldn't live with SN1, I'd choose easier speakers (if needed) to match a Nait 2, the best Nait ime.

But then you have to do the d-a-c yourself.

There are a number of members who have stated that the XS/XS 2 is the integrated amp they prefer.

I have owned and XS 2 and it is a wonderful amp and enjoyed the music. The quality of the music is excellent. The sound may be different but some prefer it over other systems. We all have different housing arrangements and room sizes and listening/personal preferences, all considerations for the systems we purchase.

The SN and Nait XS/XS 2 are different but no way it is 3 steps down in quality.

JMHO - YMMV
