NDS looks to be officially discontinued

Not surprising seeing all the new tech that is coming out of NAIM.. Would guess the NDX can't be far behind on the chopping block.  Looking forward to seeing what replaces it.

Could be an interesting day at The Bristol Show tomorrow ???

Interesting it says just 'Discontinued' by the NDS with no suggestion of a replacement as for some other previously discontinued product which were replaced. The CD555 also only states 'Discontinued' and we know that is not going to be replaced.

I could be reading too much into this and it is of course possible that the NDS will be updated with a replacement (NDS2?) in the product history page in due course. I guess the announcement will be soon as Naim have just put a stop to any new NDS purchases by the 'Discontinued' statement. Interesting.

I can hear the giggling emanating from Salisbury!

I agree, suddenly I can’t listen to it anymore.....how have I put up with something so third rate for that last two years? Mind you mine started dropping out on the BBC R3  HLS stream 30 minutes ago so I fired up ye olde NAT01 - sounds totally unbroken!

It's nice to be the proud owner of Naim's top streamer, the jolly old NDX!

I’ll give it 24 hours!

The ND555 can't be the replacement for the NDS, it is too bl**dy expensive.

So come on chaps (and ladies), what is going to replace the NDS?

NDS2 with the new digital architecture a la ND555, a new posh streamer/pre N372, nothing?

Let's give the hard working folk in Salisbury something to giggle over!

Never fear, they’ll soon offer a factory overhaul for all us hard up NDS owners.....or a new for old deal for our loyalty Cummon Trev!

They replace NDS with Nugo2 :-)

Thankfully I bought one just in time!

Well, four years in time actually.

Posted on: 22 February 2018 by nigelb

I wonder if the ND555 and the NDS replacement will both be formally announced in Bristol?

Oi you lot in Salisbury, stop tittering!

Posted on: 22 February 2018 by Emre

I was waiting for a 372 but how decided to buy Nac552

The streamers / DACs will change a lot, Next year a pocket size gadget can Best a top end one

Nac552 will end my pre amp journey for good...

Just as well, they’ll be complaining about software issues with their new toys so I’ll be sitting back and watching all those miffed early adopters

I would have thought the sub-optimal launch in the new Uniti series would have sorted out the majority of the new software issues and I assume the ND555 (and the NDS replacement) would utilise the new architecture and new software.

I am pretty sure from the pain suffered over the new Uniti series launch, Naim would not make the same mistake with a premature launch of their top streamers.

One lives in hope Sir!

I had assumed all along that as NDS has been Naim’s flagship reference player, the introduction of ND555 was its natural and inevitable replacement - not sure how much cost as such comes into the product placement?

You may be right. But the ND555 had better outclass the NDS and by a decent margin to justify the £12k plus 555PS level power supply price tag.

If the ND555 is the replacement for the NDS, then where does it leave those like me who don't have that sort of cash or don't want to spend that much on a streamer but are very happy with the NDS level of performance but would like the SQ benefit of the new architecture.

Naim are fully aware that cost does play a part in product replacement. If they are only going to offer the ND555 as a premium streamer and the NDS is discontinued, then they are going to miss out on a lot of sales. I think not.

We'll see soon enough.

Maybe an NDX replacement will be so close to NDS in sound quality, or surpass it making something else below ND555 pointless - but that is too much speculation., and I am surecall will be revealed, and probably sooner rather tgan later because once the speculation about replacements starts in earnest sales of existing kit will falter.

That makes more sense. The ND555 with the suspended sub chassis a la NDS and a posh new NDX with the new architecture and screen like the ND555 and the NDS no more.

Product line rationalisation makes a lot of sense as long as no large (performance/price point) gaps are created.

I now hear full-blown laughter emanating from Salisbury and Bristol!

Software should be fairly sorted, I am assuming it is the same as the Uniti and they have been through the wringer for the last year getting that sorted.
