Your experience with Spendor D7 ?
Posted by: pz on 22 February 2018
I would drive these speakers by 282/250. Is this a good match ? Can this amp drive these boxes 'properly'' ?
Thx.
Yes, the 250 would be an excellent match for the speakers, did a home demo with my SN2, it's an outstanding match with the speakers, and drove them with absolutely no problems.
The speakers are one of the finest I have heard at any price, congrats on an excellent choice!
PZ, been using them for a couple of years initially with a 250dr and they were excellent the 300dr has taken them to a new level as it should.
Hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
I auditioned them at dealers and at home. Not impressed, however they were compared to the B&W 804D3 which I bought. I know on here B&W are not held in high esteem, each to his own
I have only heard these in the shop but they sounded lovely with SN2 + HCDR.
Badlands - I am interested in a pair of D7s with a Supernait2. I have a 2 box set up (SN2 and CDX2).
You think a SN2 'unassisted' has enough welly for a D7?
What other alternatives did you consider?
The SN2 definitely has enough power w/o the PS to drive the Spendors without a problem, the addition of the PS does bring advantages, but it's definitely not required, other alternatives were Atohm and Proac, all excellent, you couldn't go wrong with any of those brands with a SN2. I personally preferred the brands mentioned here to some of the other brands mentioned on this forum, I just felt there was excellent synergy with these speakers and my SN2.
Just as an aside, I have heard the Spendors driven by some tube integrated amps, 34 watts per channel, that are rated at considerably less than the SN2, they also sounded excellent with the tube gear, they were able to play loud without any compression or strain.
Thanks Badlands. All good to know.
I'm waiting to see what Spendor does to replace their outgoing A6R before doing anything. I will be very interested to hear if they have something similar in sound and size that sits between their D7 and A4. (I notice they aren't launching anything this weekend).
When you mentioned Proac were you referring to them generally or to their Response D20 in particular?
I am familiar with PMC and Spendor but have not heard Proac.
My room is 10.5ft x 17 ft. Its well furnished, carpet on concrete, curtains, lots of books etc. I have speakers firing across the widest wall. I hope the D7 works but need alternatives to compare to.
PZ - you have some real power with 282/250 gear as they should be more than capable of driving the D7s.
Please let us know how you get on if you demo or buy.

They had a new A7 at Bristol today.

Actually it was the Response D30DS and the Response DT8, both speakers compare very favorably to the Spendor D7's.
PCD - that's very interesting! Thanks for posting.
Badlands - will look those proac speakers out. Thank you.
I'd also check out Kudos. I've used C20's and now S20's with a 282/250 DR in a similar sized room and they work very well.
Not compared them to the Spendors but I suspect the end result will be down to personal preference and how well the speakers work in the room.
Being bottom ported the Kudos speakers don't mind being close to the back wall which may be a consideration.

I've auditioned D7 in my home system few times. I was very close to change my ATC SCM40Mk2 for them but changed my mind right before pulling the trigger. D7 is superb speaker, extremely fast, transparent, clear and detailed sound. I've never heard as transparent speaker as D7 before. It doesn't hide anything. At first this sounded so exciting but in the long run I found some tiring elements in the sound which I didn't like. It's not always good to hear everything, at least that's how I felt in the end. Of course this is very much system dependent and might only mean that I have some imbalances in my equipment chain. D7 is easier speaker to drive than ATC. SN2 + PSU does very good job with ATC but it excels with D7. This probably makes D7 sound faster than ATC (which already outperformed PMC 20.23 in speed). D7 also works very well close to the wall, no problem having them only 15-30cm from back wall. ATC outperforms D7 in power, it's clearly bigger speaker. Bass hits deeper with more force, while D7's low end is more agile in my setup. ATC has magical midrange with its 3-way design and I'd say they're pretty much on par here, just slightly different presentation. ATC overall sounds more comfortable and little darker than D7. In my setup ATC is easier to listen to but D7 digs more out of the recording.
I first had D7 at my place for one week, then returned them and later on, after some little tweaking with my cables, I wanted to audition them again because I really loved the sound and wanted them to sound perfect in my system. After the second one week audition I decided to stick with the ATC for now. I'm actually planning to audition them for a third time, now when I've added PSU for Naim DAC and changed from HiCap DR to another PSU for my SN2. The new Spendor A7 is also very interesting speaker, I'll probably wait for my dealer to get a demo pair and maybe audition them all at once.

Thanks Patu - exactly my thinking too. I can't see any info on the internet about the new A7 which is appearing at Bristol this weekend.

Not on their site yet but I got a pdf brochure from my dealer. I only found this site with the description clearly copied from the brochure: https://www.fanthorpes.co.uk/s...spendor-a7-speakers/
Patu and Badlands - Thanks guys for your really helpful posts. Much appreciated.
The brochure info on the A7 is now on line for that retailer. I cannot find anything anywhere else but am sure it will emerge in the coming days and weeks.

I was disappointed by them, tbh.

As was I. Very lacklustre. But then it’s the same whenever I listen to spendor so maybe it’s just me.
