Nac 72/Nait 2 over the years
Posted by: MangoMonkey on 03 March 2018
Anyone know when the last major changes to the Nac72 happened? Did they start having regular RCA inputs for the Phono stage at any point?
Did the Nait-2 ever take rca inputs for phono stage and CD?
The NAC72 never had regular RCA phono inputs - it started with a two pairs of BNC then moved to one pair of BNC when it gained a CD input on DIN.
The NAIT 2 had RCA phonos only on the Phono input (or the CD input for the CD version).
The Nait 2 had RCA inputs for phono. The rest were DIN.
I wonder why the nac72 never got phono rca inputs. It was in production for 8 years beyond the nait2...
Mango,
You and I have been down similar paths. Let me tell you how the movie ends - one system based on a rebuilt/restored Nait2, and a second system based on a rebuilt/restored 72/hicap/140 or 250. When you get here time will slow down. A blinding white light will appear. The music will be sweeter than you ever thought possible. Come join me.

Probably a cordial agreement between Ivor and Julian?

Because on the phono input BNCs sound better than RCA phonos. Naim compromised on the NAITs on the basis that at the entry level potential customers might be put off by BNCs and that at this level the performance difference between the two connectors would not be fully revealed. To have put them on the NAC72 would have been an unacceptable compromise.
Makes sense. Questions :
a) Who is Ivor?
b) where do I find BNC terminated vinyl outputs today? I guess Non-Rega TT give you the option of having your own cables?

The BNC connectors cost next to nothing and can replace rca connectors on any TT cables. I had this done by the dealer for my Alphason HR-100S arm cable and it was well worth the hassle.
b) your Naim dealer re-terminates your tonearm cable with 50 ohm BNC connectors, or you purchase a tonearm lead with said BNC connectors already fitted.
n.b. the Naim Aro came with a tonearm cable already terminated with appropriate BNC connectors.
The Stageline comes with RCAs as standard though, even the moving coil ones. Are standards slipping or does it make little difference to a stageline?
While RCA Phono is standard (it's Naim's basic phono stage), you can specify your Stageline with RCA or with BNC. For example, I own an early MC Stageline which I specified as a BNC version. If you're really serious about vinyl then you'll want a Superline which comes with both BNC and WBT Next Gen RCA Phonos, the latter being the best RCA Phonos around.

Most turntables never came with bnc so forced many - far too many - to use rca/bnc adapters which is the evil
No doubt bnc is better but for most users they would have been better served with rca, avoiding the adapters.
I use adaptors with my turntable, I wouldn’t say they’re evil, I’m very happy with the sound. I’ve considered replacing the RCA with BNC on the tonearm cable, but it doesn’t appear a simple job with van den hull D502.
I’m sure fitting BNC would in theory be an improvement, but there are probably a dozen or so things I could do to my system, that would improve things in theory. But, I can’t really be bothered, I’m very happy with the turntable as it is.
my NAC 72 (newer version) has rca input,
looks that they are factory fitted ...
