Naim Nova - poor build quality, poor QC or am I just unlucky?
Posted by: Sweeney Denis on 03 March 2018
Hi everyone,
Have recently taken delivery of my 2nd Nova in just 2 weeks and both have had exactly the same issue - a long thin plastic block located under the front facia (it's where the Naim logo lights up) has just dropped off! On examination, it's attached to the main unit by the thinest piece of doubled sided transparent tape. I couldn't quite believe it. The Australian distributor has told my dealer that Naim is aware of the issue and is working on a fix.
I feel very disappointed as I can't for the life of me understand why Naim would build such a thing and then attach it in such a slipshod fashion and wonder if any other forum members has had the same issue?
Cheers
I have had 1 x Atom and 2 x Nova, but not had the issues you mention, but once planted in place they stay put.
Sweeney, IIRC Naim possibly received a bad batch of adhesive strips but I've asked Steve Hopkins to clarify the situation.
Thanks Richard - do you have any update on the situation?
There was something in another thread a couple of months ago, possibly the same issue.
Double sided sticky tape and plastic are not usually something that you associate with Naim components.
Or do you just not know they are there, because the tape has held?

Yes Sweeney, Steve and Naim QA confirmed it was a bad tape batch sometime just prior to Christmas. Unfortunately it looks like some units got out before it was discovered.
They will work with your dealer and distributor to get it fixed for you.
For a premium product I think Naim shoud have thought of a better fixing method.
Surly if it's under the unit bolts through the plastic into the main chassis, tape over time will loose it's adhesive, two to three years when users move their Nova who knows if the bottom will drop off.

Depends on the tape. It's unlikely to be double-sided cello tape. There are indistrial adhesives and tapes that should have no problem bonding unlike materials indefinitely.
There is a lot of tech that goes into modern adhesives.
I take your point regarding modern adhesive but I think at this level there is a better solution.
Double side tape works fine on car body mouldings and badges. Mine required some serious effort to get remove despite being 28 years old.

I think you’ll find that this is a well respected and (usually) very effective when done properly, with users never normally being aware. I think it may extend to things like car ‘badges’ on vehicles costing more than Statement, though I don’t know that for a certainty.
I've seen this on a Nova recently - it did make me wonder about the light source for the logo, and if I bought some green plastic film whether or not I might be able to change to a green Naim logo by sticking it above the bit that dropped off
Certainly on my BMW, that didn't cost close to let alone more than Statement, but wasn't cheap, the badges are stuck on with adhesive. In a car that's the best way, because you don't risk rust starting around a fixing hole. Not sure that's the same problem with a Naim amplifier except maybe for a high end bathroom install(!), but it shows adhesive isn't a cheap jack solution.
On the green cellophane idea, the Naim guys told me during a factory visit that they tried the new Unitis with green rather than white and it just didn't look aa good. So go there at your peril....

If Naim can advise me where they source good quality adhesives of this nature I need some to re-affix the bottom plastic 'gear/cog' assembly of a door that has integral window blinds as the plastic housing to which the blind cord fits inferiorly has just detached from the glass - again a situation where good adhesive should be fine but a fixing hole would be bad for insulation!
I was in my dealer today and all stock was shipped back to make sure that they were checked or had a new strip fitted.
Thanks

Thanks Richard, that's good to know as I'd like to stick with the Naim brand

Anyone with this issue should surely test for audio quality differences with/without the strip
Don't forget everyone, Forum AUP forbids any suggestion of anyone using their own-sourced adhesive to make a DIY repair rather than shipping a unit half way round the world and back so Naim can do the same.

Definitely a candidate for moderation now......
This plastic thingy also fell off from my star. I put it back and since two days it stays there. There is no way I'm going to send the unit for refix - please let me know where to get this Teddy Tape? Or maybe there is already a DR version available?
Apparently my dealer was told it is taped on as it is an access point for servicing, so not a good idea to araldite or gorilla glue it back on.

Bad tape batch. Blame the unaccountable little guy. Did the dog also eat Naim's homework?

Were you moving it at the time? My Nova seems fine, but as it sits on the table and doesn't get moved, I probably won't know.
