Naim Nova - poor build quality, poor QC or am I just unlucky?
Posted by: Sweeney Denis on 03 March 2018
Hi everyone,
Have recently taken delivery of my 2nd Nova in just 2 weeks and both have had exactly the same issue - a long thin plastic block located under the front facia (it's where the Naim logo lights up) has just dropped off! On examination, it's attached to the main unit by the thinest piece of doubled sided transparent tape. I couldn't quite believe it. The Australian distributor has told my dealer that Naim is aware of the issue and is working on a fix.
I feel very disappointed as I can't for the life of me understand why Naim would build such a thing and then attach it in such a slipshod fashion and wonder if any other forum members has had the same issue?
Cheers

Joerand. It is what it is. Naim's QA have confirmed. Would you rather it was something else?

The little guy? ??
The adhesives manufacturing companies are mostly many many times larger than Naim (3M or Henkel [Loctite] for instance!)

Were you moving it at the time? My Nova seems fine, but as it sits on the table and doesn't get moved, I probably won't know.
no no, it was sittin at its destination ever since I took it out of the box.
The plastic thing had come off mine in the box (the first one) and fell off it's replacement after about 3 days in situ...

Ah, I’ve just realised I’d completely misunderstood the issue. I thought it was the massive lump of clear plastic the Unitit sits on underneath the main metal body, so I couldn’t see how it fell off unless you lifted the Star up, now I’ve read the original post properly I see the issue. Thanks.

Aeroplanes and cars are held together structurally with double-sided tape.

I almost made the same comnent. But to be accurate, automotive and aerospace industries use tape extensively to couple so fairly heft loads. But "structurally" no. I assure you the wings and tail are NOT held on by tape.
Though as soon as I wrote that I recall my honeymoon flight on Jamaican Airways. Silver duct tape ran in an unbroken circle aroubd the cabin on row 27. Did make me wonder which two plane wrecks the stuck together to make the one I was on :-)
4k for a device that has bits fixed in place with sticky tape. Is it high end audiophile grade tape? Maybe too much RF made it fall off.

When I heard about the adhesive tape, I had a similar view, I went Googling to see how long such tape was meant to last. Having now seen how many parts of cars which are an order of magnitude or more more expensive than a Nova, I'm not so freaked, it looks like this is standard behaviour across many industry sectors. I'm also dead impressed by how proficient and pervasive the industrial adhesive business is.
And not forgetting modern medicine, where their are specialist adhesives used to stick body parts back together, such as using some versions of superglue on wounds, rather than the old stitches
Had exactly the same problem with Star,Unit being replaced by Naim apparently my dealer says.

Yes but you’d hope to avoid a bad batch!
I’m on my second Uniti where the plinth has fallen off. It’s been agreed to be replaced.
Not sure if i want a third at the moment. And may consider looking elsewhere.

Clearly it's not designed to fall off, and if the adhesive is defective and can be simply replaced I'm not sure I'd be too worried about getting another unless you don't like the Nova's sound and functionality.
I agree it looks shoddy, but should be easily fixed.
If as an earlier post suggests it's actually designed to be removed to allow access to a service port then I'd expect removal/replacement to be a standard procedure for Naim or their dealers - is there any 'port' visible above wher ethe strip affixes?
I had an email rom Naim and they've changed the build process so should cure it. Mine is being replaced so contact your dealer.

Surly if it's under the unit bolts through the plastic into the main chassis, tape over time will loose it's adhesive, two to three years when users move their Nova who knows if the bottom will drop off.
I share your view. The bottom platic cheapen the look of the unit to begin with. I also do not like the glossy surfaced remote of the new uniti. It is a scratch magnet and the sharp edges do not give you a premium feel to it.

I haven’t noticed any visible port, but yes I do enjoy the sound and also the convenience of a single unit.
I also like the fact it negates the need in my case for constantly box swapping. My replacement unit is due tomorrow, so hopefully no further issues.
I took a very close look to the nova after I tried to mute it by touching the Naim logo. That peace of plastic feels very cheap and is having play when pressing on the left or right side. It also feels thin and very cheap.
For such money I don't want to buy a Nova, just because of the cheap built feeling of the Nova alone. For £3700 less ok, but for £4200?

As far as I can tell the Naim logo on the Nova isn't a mute button, that was on the Unitiqute. Mute is on the remote and the app.
Think I must have been twofold unlucky.Collected my Nova at the end of January.Connected HDMI cable after a few days to see how the Tv Sounded .Unfortunately it kept coming up with the display No input detected.Checked Tv settings were correct for ARC .Ended up ordering a new cable from Amazon to rule out any compatibility issues .Still no Joy.Spoke to Naim and dealer who felt it was a problem with the ARC port on my Nova.while waiting for a new unit said plastic block dropped of the front of my Nova.I must say I feel very disappointed re Naims QC to have problems like this on what was a brand new high end Unit.Got my Replacement unit yesterday everything working as it should be straight out of the box.Fingers crossed no more problems and am able to just concentrate on the fantastic sound the Nova produces
Whats the mod they've done to stop the bar falling off please. I'm still waiting for my replacemental Star

Richard fed back a few days ago that they'd had a defective batch of the adhesive strip used to hold the bar on, so I don't think there is a mod per se.

There will be a new SuperNova out soon
Stripped or not ?
In exactly five days from now
