The “old” ND5 XS is my “new”.  Since it was ex-demo, less than 12 months old, it was great value, it can be upgraded with an external power supply if I want to do that, and it can be operated from the front panel if the iPad is elsewhere...  I love it, music sounds brilliant, RP is terrific, and control automation is really useful.

So simply not interested in the “new”. Attention has switch back to improving vinyl replay.

The newest looks more a stripped version to satisfy both SI and XS customers whereas yours was potentially really close to the next step.

I am interested in the ND555... I’ve enjoyed the NDS since launch, but am prepared to believe that it is possible to exceed this level of performance. The new streamer architecture makes sense as it allows Naim to focus on one standard platform across the range, so software upgrades, certification etc.  become simpler. I am fascinated to see how they manage to push the performance level beyond the NDS, so look forward to reading the inevitable white paper, then getting a demo unit into my room for a listen. It will need to be materially better before I part with any cash, but if it achieves this I will place an order.

Ditto - especially if it outperforms the CD555, which overall I prefer to the NDS - and above all if it offers a faff-free solution. I can't be bothered with all the bits in pieces in the usual NAS and networking chain.

I will wait until I have had a proper demo and then I will decide whether the new player is for me.

More than fun, it was still proper hifi by most standards. And relavent to this thread too. If you have a well balanced system that is steadily losing financial value, it makes sense (to me) to find another home for it in another room or with a family memeber. I'd similarly hang on to my NDX forever and if I ever did upgrade to an ND555, the NDX would migrate to another room. That's not always reasonable of course for all people.

Dave, I’ve never known Naim not to improve on what went before, so I believe that ND555 will be appreciably better than NDS. But there will be a lot of soulsearching  about whether the difference is value for money. I have already made that decision, and I will buy an ND555. At my age, I can’t afford to wait for the ‘next best thing’, and Naim has never let me down.

Of course we will also hear the usual argument that  expenditure of this kind makes no sense, and that the same results may be had by a combination of raspberry PI and some inexpensive wonder DAC.

This is fantastic news.I currently have a ndx but couldn't stretch to nds at time of purchase.The more that decide to trade for nd555 helps my cause.Hopefully there will be a few nds's come to the used market to choose from then I may well move on from my already capable ndx.So,it's time to trade in your broken nds's to please me.

Yes, NDS used values should be strong as a result of the new range.

My concern is that I have nowhere to go in the Naim range if my NDS needs to be replaced. I use Tidal a lot for new music discovery and would struggle to find an “affordable” replacement source if Tidal went or the streaming world moved on. I can’t see how I could ever justify £13.5 on a streamer (more when you factor in Naim’s policy of increasing prices ahead of wage inflation). 

Perhaps they are gambling that existing customers will find it just as expensive and more inconvenient to switch to another supplier? A Dave plus Melco less the NDS + 555 trade in, or a Linn Klimax?

If you’re just using Tidal for music discovery, and anyway considering its possible limited sound quality compared to local streaming, is an NDS level of player critical? For me, at least, discovery doesn’t need the best quality. But then, if you have an NDS level player for playing locally stored music them Tidal is just a bonus.

And a big question in here is how close to NDS the sound of the improved NDX-2 will be...

I find the seemingly constant references to Tidal being “inferior” to the UpNp slightly perplexing. In my system I honestly cannot tell any difference and Tidal sounds superb.

That said, maybe when you get to NDS level (I’m only at 272/XPSDR) there is a difference?

I can’t help thinking that there may be a bit of “I can’t and will not accept an internet streamed service from remote servers being as good as my local hard drive so I’m going to say it isn’t” going on!

Ultimately everyone is entitled to their opinion but I thought I’d just give the Tidal service a vote of confidence...

Other than on Tidal, (Qobuz, Spotify etc) depending on the publisher/distributor, audio watermarking is encoded in the distribution master (as indeed for digital download purchase music too) and this can and usually does sound inferior to CDs which as far as I am aware are not generally watermarked.

However non watermarked music can sound rather good from Tidal... I still find it not quite as enjoyable as locally served audio files, but I have written why this is the case in my experience before...

There is a metronome streamer review in this months Hifi news, it is not a bargain as well

I have this idea of maybe a new 1000£ gadget might beat a 13,000£ streamer in a few years, am I being silly?
