Clive,

there are a number of factors that will determine which cartridge alignment protractor is best.  The most important factor is the arm you will be using.  For example, most are designed with either Baerwald or Stevenson alignment in mind, but companies like Rega tend to go for an alignment that minimises inner groove tracing errors at the expense of greater error at the outer grooves. Generally I would recommend using whichever alignment protractor is supplied by the maker of your tonearm. The page on Vinyl Engine about alignment protractors is a good read here.

However, if it's a protractor that you need for actually mounting a new tonearm then that's quite a different thing.  Here I would highly recommend the Dr Feikert Protractor, which covers both arm and cartridge alignment. A very useful high quality tool that I have myself, and so can vouch for it without reservation.

n.b. for general cartridge alignment the Townshend Protractor is very useful as it shows the various error traces quite clearly for whichever alignment you use.

Thanks very much Richard and forgive my ignorance....the Townhend is what I was after.

Another good alignment device is the Dennesen Geometric Soundtracktor. I have been using this with different arms and it is very easy to use.
