TV retuning and SWMBO

Posted by: Dungassin on 02 September 2011

We're off on hols tomorrow for 2/52 (visiting the "out-laws" in Malta).  SWMBO is getting very concerned that all her soaps/"reality" TV etc won't get recorded properly because there are 2 retunings for digital/HD on Freeview while we're away.  "But what happens if my programs don't record?" is the comment.  I've tried to reassure her that the retunings probably have more to do with adding the HD channels than anything else, and that the main 5 channels will probably stay exactly where they are.  Somehow I know if things don't get recorded it will all somehow be MY FAULT!

Logic has very little to do with SWMBO "discussions" ...

If she is "very concerned" about missing some reality TV or a soap, I'd suggest getting rid of the TV altogether and rediscover actual life. But that's just me.

Perhaps I exaggerated slightly (though if you knew SWMBO you might not think so).  Got to have a little moan occasionally, haven't I?

Her love of soaps/reality TV is the main reason I have my AV setup in the study.  Basically I'm escaping from her viewing choices.

Going off-topic, I was adding up how long/often I have been allowed to use the active Olive system in the living room over the last year.  I reckon its only about 30 hours worth altogether spread over about 12 sessions. (I have to work around her gardening, visiting cronies etc.)  Makes me seriously consider selling the Olive stuff system and just keeping the LP12 and Denon CD Recorder from it, but then I'd have to figure out some way of using the LP12 in the study without it being in direct line of fire from the speakers.  Would have to be a wall shelf as when I tried my daughter's RP3 it jumped when you walked across the floor.   Of course, I'd have to get SWMBO something like a Uniti to use in the living room as a replacement ...

I've managed to get  my own flat (mine ) and have it sitting on the back burner, that's how serious i am to escape such mind numbing torture (soaps) and it works!

I soon get a call when i'm needed but sometimes my naim system get's me greif as i have to leave it and it always happens on the best tune or when the system is teasing me. Oh well, you can't have it all ways.

I'm always glad to show the TV license people i have no TV and they always have that, oh well, look on them when they see the layout

Pricey though.....but it far out weighs any future upgrades i might like, just sitting there as is.

Get rid of the TV. If the wife leaves you will be blessed if that is how far under the thumb you are.

Dung.

Ever since you have been on here,You have blamed your wife and her mother for everything..

You can control a Sky box to record from a million miles away with a iPhone.

But  who the fook is bothered by TV soaps?

You can catch up if needs must on the tinternet.

Nine times out of ten the tinternet will tell you whats going to happen in the next month or two anyway.

So you can tell your wife you are happy now KNOWINING YOU WONT MISS ANYTHING.

And dont forget to take a short story book for the flight.

In my area some of the channels are not changing in the 1st phase of the retune.  The main rejiggle for all channels happens on the 2nd retune when all the remaining anologue TX go off & the HD transmissions start.  But in my area nothing will stay where it is now & it looks like the same situation from the Sutton Coalfield TX.

Check out the various www sites for your area,  you might need to deep dive around more than one to find out which channels are moving.  But if you are not back before the 2nd date, it looks like you've missed it anyhow.

Thanks for that info.  As I said, I'm sure it will miraculously become "all my fault" when Home and Away, Doctors etc fail to record.  Alas it might also mean that I'll miss some of my Dr Who fix.

Catchup TV on Freeview is usually only available for 7-8 days, which isn't much use when you're away for a fortnight.  I don't want to inflate Murdoch's income any more, so refuse to have anything to do with Sky.  Being selfish, Sky would probably addict SWMBO to yet more soaps.

I love my wife very much, and I am sure she moans about me just as much as I do about her.  She has a "volatile" temperament (stereotypical mediterranean) which I have learned to tolerate over the last 40 years. I don't watch soaps etc, but she likes them.  Fine.  I just avoid them and leave her to it.  Unfortunately for me and the Olives, that means she gets the living room, because all my other stuff (hobbies, AV, computer games etc) are in the study.  I dread to think what state my AV stuff would be in if I let her use it.  I'd probably have to factory reset it to sort out the confusion.  Hence my semi-serious musings about why I keep the Olive stuff at all.  I retired with stress-induced angina and have learned to avoid confrontational situations as much as possible, which usually leads to taking the path of least resistance.

I'm off to sort out my holiday clothes etc now, as we're (hopefully) leaving here at 5pm.  SWMBO is, as usual at this point, in flap mode.

Enjoy your holiday.

Your humorous and self-deprecating musings about the ups and downs and compromises in married life are perhaps being taken a tad too seriously by the Borg.

Thanks.  I'm going to switch off all my gear at the mains except the various TV recorders.  Looking forward to seeing how my great-nieces and nephews are coming along.  So, unless I get VERY bored waiting for SWMBO to be ready to leave, there won't be any more postings from me for a fortnight.

(ducks to avoid "thank God" comments from various members)

Well, it's usually a waste of time when SWMBO is involved.

I would suggest faking the symptoms of early onset dementia.
