UnitiServe's Server(s)

Posted by: pcstockton on 02 September 2011

It may be a silly question but.... with a UnitiServe can I stream remotely to PlugPlayer as I do know with my JRiver Server?

Also, can I setup multiple servers in the Serve, e.g one at Full PCM, and one transcoded for remote streaming?

Thanks!

Patrick

Best to use the digital output on the UnitiServe for hi-res and set the UPnP setting for CD quality 44.1kHz/16-bit. Then you can use PlugPlayer via UPnP into a generic iPod dock, if so desired (in fact, this is my shower system).

Shower system?  Isn't any pretension to decent sound quality negated out by the white noise from the shower itself?

Patrick,

I don't think your question was answered; and the answer is beyond my knowledge because I am not familiar with the multitude of functions of JRiver Server. I think the answer is No; you can neither set up multiple servers in the UServe, nor can you set up remote streaming through internet to faraway locations (as you do with JRiver). UServe "serves" only on a "local" network. Multiple clients in a multi-room system can use the UServe as the UPnP server at the same time (also for different music), though. However the format setting on the UServe will apply to all clients. The Stream Format options available are Native, CD 44.1kHz/16 bit and Convert to WAV.

The UPnP layer can only transcode to one setting for all servers (CD quality 44.1kHz/16-bit is the preferred setting for baseline DLNA compatibility), but this does not affect local playback via the digital audio output ("local zone 1").

You can control streams via J.River–for local UPnP rendering or to a remote device such as PlugPlayer (make sure to turn on UPnP Control within the app).

That is a bummer.....

Isnt anyone else using Plugplayer to stream to your car/office/friends house etc?????  This is the best aspect of UPNP!!!!!!!!

Sure, streaming Guided By Voices to the backyard while I am smoking ribs is nice, but I stream to PP all day long during the week.  I havent synced music to my iPhone for a year.

Patrick, if I could find a use for this it would no doubt be cool, I also benefit from 5meg upload speed so it would be douable, however most of the UK has half meg up speed or less, making UPNP over internet quite difficult

Sorry to go off topic, but can the UnitiServe provide a UPnP stream at 24/192 (for files stored on a NAS)?

Absolutely.

Would bringing ALL of your music with you in your car, to work, friends house's, trips, etc...  ANYWHERE you have 3G service or WIFI (like when I was hiking on Mt. Hood), be a use for you?

I find transcoding on my "Remote-256" server to 256 results in zero drops unless I lose 3G signal.  Transcoding to 320 brings about 1 drop-out per 5-10 minutes.

I have no clue what the speeds are for AT&T's 3G in the Pacific Northwest, but it definitely is the bottleneck. When i am using my old iPhone (no service, wifi only) at work I NEVER get drops even with 320.  Even though my Server is going over wireless G to my router then out to who know where.

I find 256 to be more than sufficient for SQ reasons given I am using one of those cassette adapters into the Nakamichi.  Sounds great in fact.  Of course the CD player is MUCH better but I rarely make an effort to swap out the CDs in the 6-changer.

At home I use my "Naim" server in JRMC which passes along full native bitrate (I assume the iPhone dithers if hires).  No drop outs there at all.  This is all on wireless with a simple Netgear G router (yes G).

Having more than one server is paramount for me.  I suppose a Naim server isn't in the cards for me.  I will have to slum it with the Qute I guess.  I should probably demo one to see if it improves on the Juli@ digital output.  Also to see if moving the PC from the listening room/circuits makes a difference.

Anyway... I was using all three servers concurrently the other day without any problems.  So f-ing cool.  I was using "Naim", "Remote-256" and "Remote-320" servers on three different devices, 2 of which were away from home.  No issues, no drops, album art, full library etc... $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Patrick,  I'm awarding you serious bonus points for managing to include "Nakamichi" and Cassette" in a streaming thread (that's still on-topic) in the Streaming Audio Room of the Forum.

And thank you for reminding me that when I upgrade my iPhone in a few months time I should still be able to use my old one as a sort of iPod Touch.  I think...

Patrick,

Am I mistaken in thinking that locker services are going to put paid to the whole notion of streaming from your own server?

I use Plugplayer around the house, all tracks are stored on a Buffalo NAS serving a Uniti SSD.

Richard,

Hilarious...  My car is from '97 so still has the cassette deck with the 6-changer in the glove compartment.  I am fortunate to have bought a car whose first owner got EVERY single option available for the model.  I found the window sticker folded up in the owner's manual and just about peed myself.  Gold package, traction control, first aid kit ($500), etc...  Such a waste.  But they did pony up for the Nakamichi Upgrade with subwoofer, tweeters and bigger amps.  It sounds fantastic.

Frank,

I dont know what locker services are.  I of course pay for my internet service both at home and for my iPhone so it isn't really free now.  But my now obsolete UNLIMITED data package will be with me until I leave AT&T (not any time soon).  I love grandfathered deals.

At home I think there is some monthly limit from Comcast.  I think it is a couple hundred GBs so not worried there.  I dont think I have ever come anywhere close to maxing it.  The one month I checked on it I had only used 7% and was a few days from the end of the cycle.

On another note.... I noticed that JRMC scrobbles all concurrently playing servers to LastFM.  Nice.  I assumed only local playback was sent in.

Cheers!

Patrick

Richard,

Absolutely re: old iPhone.  Dont trade it in.  I keep my 3G docked in the backyard with a decent desktop PC/Subwoofer speaker system.  My BBQ System.

When i get an iPhone 5 I must get a Shower System going like Dave.
