STAR Not seeing USB drive after format and ripping cd's , but can see in "server"

Posted by: Proterra on 10 March 2018

I formatted my usb drive as requested and then ripped some cd's to it. Then added some more to the same folder onthat drive from my pc.

The usb drive can't be seen by the star, but all the cd's are showing in the servers/local music folder.

Does anybody have any idea why this is happening, please.

I would use the server input to access music files on the USB drive, as the metadata (album art, track names, etc.) can be viewed properly, which is not always the case when using the USB input. If you have any other streamers on your network, they will also be able to see these music files and play them.

Thanks

I think that using the 'server' input is the correct way. I'm in the process of ripping my cd collection it's fun actually, sooooo easy.

And those ripped cds sound terrific!

Slightly off topic, but I've been wondering, how does STAR sound when playing CDs in its drive?  I ask because HDX rips are excellent, but when used as a CD player, HDX falls down badly.

It sounds superb playing CD's

Thanks, that's good to hear.

I struggled to find the rips on a USB stick also at first but doing a search from the apps home page brought up local drives and tidal searches I found the rips that way and they sounded great!

I concur the CD player sounds excellent.

If you have the USB input turned on, you should be able to see the USB stick contents, although possibly not with full metadata and artwork. In the Server input, you should see the contents of the USB stick listed under 'Local Music'.

That's odd, you should be able to see it! Have you tried both USB ports, front and back?

Think I've sussed it. When formatted Star 2 folders were created Scratch and Store. Inthe store folder there are downloads, music and recycle bin folders. InMusic there are HQ,LQ and MQ folders.

When ripping cd's  it puts it into one of these folders on mine its MQ.

I tried a  USB stick in the front which has all the music in the root directory, Voila it is picked up and shows all my music files.

Though I've downloaded some spotify stuff but can't see that anywhere,

The MQ folder is the correct place for CDs ripped on the Star.

Good to hear that you can now see the music on your USB stick too. Spotify music is really only downloadable for offline playback via the Spotify app on your portable device (although I understand that there are 3rd party apps that can remove DRM to make the files 'portable'). Does the Spotify input not enable you to play downloaded music via the app? Or maybe by using Spotify via the Chromecast input?

Yes the Spotify app works fine, I just wondered where the files you downolad are stored or not as the case might be. They are not in download

I think you’ll find that they are stored on the phone/tablet you are using for the Spotify app.
